    Description

Do you like to sew? Our hospice patients are in need of fidget mats. All skill levels welcome!

Alzeheimer's disease and various forms of dementia can cause restless and fidgety hands. Fidgety hands may be a way of expressing anxiety or frustration. The fidget mat/blanket can provide comfort and address the tactile stimulation needs of our hospice patients. The fidget mat/blanket/quilt/pillow may be the perfect item to soothe and calm a patient while safely stimulating those busy hands. People living with dementia still feel the need to be productive and fidget/activity mats can be the way for some of them to do that. With the ability to zip, lace, button, buckle, etc., they can be occupied for a bit and feel a sense of accomplishment and contentment.

What is a fidget blanket/mat? They are activity blankets, fidget mats, busy quilts that are small enough to fit on a senior's lap that have a variety of textures, movable parts, such as beads, zippers, pockets, key chains, buttons and more. It can even be a vest or apron.

Long-distance support is welcome. If you are nearby, we can provide you with items that we have collected for the fidget mats. They can be made from the comfort of your home or have a fidget mat making party with your sewing friends.

If you enjoy sewing and being creative, as well as supporting those at the end of life, this might be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!

Please reach out to me at kate.culpepper@lhcgroup.com with any questions or even ideas to help our hospice with this project for our patients. I can also provide pictures of example blankets. You don't have to be an expert. All skill levels welcome!

    Sincerely,
