    Description

Seeking a volunteer team leader and team members for the Brampton Youth Environmental Speaking Contest (YES). If you would like to apply for one of these opportunities, please send your resume and a brief explanation of why you're interested to Idowu@BioEcoCity.org . Please mention you saw this at Idealist.

Brampton Biosphere Eco-City (BBEC) is seeking a leader for a small group of volunteers, to develop an environmental speaking contest for Brampton high school students, for a second year. Youth from two high schools had competed in a successful contest in June 2025. The target date for the next YES contest will be in the winter of 2026 and will be designed to attract students from more schools.

Competing in the YES contest encourages young people to learn more about sustainability. It motivates them to think about environmental issues in Brampton. And it inspires them to express their thoughts on how to sustainably address those issues.

As a team leader, you will organize planning of the project and coordinate tasks of team volunteers. They will develop promotional material and guidelines for students, for distribution and placement on the BBEC website (Brampton.BioEcoCity.org). Team members will contact schools to find student competitors, and local organizations and businesses for support. Most volunteer work is online, but residence in urban or rural Brampton is preferred.

    Key Responsibilities of Team Leader:

    • Project Planning: Create, with the team, a staged plan for project development.
    • Team Coordination: Organize monthly meetings to track progress and review assignments.
    • Onboarding: Help new volunteers to take up their assignments within the team.
    • Learning: Participate in national monthly national meetings of team leaders to share ideas.
    • Show Commitment: Demonstrate commitment to team with 4-5 hours / week of involvement.

As a team member, you may be asked to contribute to a variety of tasks, including:

    • Participating in online team meetings
    • Planning and scheduling the project
    • Developing promotional material and guidelines for students, school clubs and school staff
    • Helping to find a venue for the contest
    • Visiting schools to provide briefings, to staff and students, on the project
    • Contacting local organizations and businesses to request support
    • Participating in an online workshop for registered participants
    • Attending the contest to provide logistical support
