    Description

Volunteer to Tutor Children and Adults -basic reading, writing, & math

Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization! We provide free tutoring for children and adults in Horry County, SC who struggle with basic reading, writing, and/or math.

Our volunteers tutor 1 hour, twice each week for children and 2 hours/once a week for adults. We provide the materials and training for you to provide the most effective help for the student you are assigned. Tutors teach one-to-one and in their local library.

Each student has a special program that meets their needs. Tutor volunteers consistently report that the materials are easy to use and you don't have to be a teacher! However, if you are a former educator, please help us out!

We work with the schools and our Executive Director attends parent-school meetings (IEP, 504 Plans, and Assessment Planning meetings) as well.

We have a long waitlist of students wanting to be tutored. We hope you join our team!

    Instructions:

Once you have submitted your request to volunteer at Palmetto Literacy Council, a member of our staff will call or email to set up a time so that we can meet and determine which volunteer opportunity fits best for you. After you fill out our volunteer applications, we will run a background check. Once the background check has been completed, you will attend a Volunteer Orientation Training conducted by Dr. Dodi Hodges, our Founder and Executive Director. If you are volunteering to become a tutor, you will be assigned a student who you will meet at a meeting between you, the student, parent and PLC staff.
