    Grant Writer (Volunteer)

Commitment: 6 months minimum | 10–15 hours per week | Remote

    About Us

A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City. Our mission is to empower children and teens (ages 6–18) diagnosed with cancer to explore their artistic passions—whether through art, music, writing, acting, or other creative outlets. Artistic expression provides strength, healing, and hope, and we are dedicated to creating opportunities for these young artists to thrive.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a motivated Grant Writer (Volunteer) to support our fundraising and development efforts. In this role, you will research funding opportunities, craft compelling proposals, and contribute to projects that directly sustain and grow our programs. This is a highly collaborative role ideal for someone with strong writing skills and an interest in nonprofit development.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Research and identify prospective grants, foundations, and sponsorship opportunities.
    • Write, edit, and submit persuasive grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and supporting materials.
    • Collaborate with program leaders to gather data, stories, and impact metrics for applications.
    • Track grant deadlines, submission status, and reporting requirements in an organized system.
    • Assist with donor communications and other development-related writing projects as needed.
    • Contribute to long-term funding strategy by monitoring trends in nonprofit fundraising.

    Qualifications

    • 1–2+ years of experience in grant writing, fundraising, or nonprofit development (professional or volunteer).
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
    • Excellent research and organizational abilities.
    • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive) and Microsoft Office.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fully remote environment.
    • Passion for the mission of A Free Bird and enthusiasm for contributing to a meaningful cause.

    Additional Details

    • This is a remote volunteer position requiring a 6-month minimum commitment at 10–15 hours per week.
    • Flexible schedule, with occasional deadlines for grant submissions.
    • Must have reliable internet access and availability for virtual meetings/check-ins.
