    Description

    Horse Feeder and Barn Chores

Thank you for your interest in joining the We Can Ride feeding team. Being a feeder is rewarding and also hard work. We try to have one staff and two volunteers at every shift. You will work out in the elements in the middle of beautiful Baker Park. The tasks can definitely get you into shape and give you a great sense of accomplishment. Our horses are the backbone of our program, and in a direct way, taking care of them changes the lives of the people we serve. Please carefully read through the information below, and contact Jodi Ertmer with any questions at jodie@wecanride.org Feeder Qualifications ● 18 years of age or older ● Volunteered as a leader or barn aide in classes at least one session OR have significant experience working with horses outside of We Can Ride ● Ability to lift 50 pounds, push and dump a fully loaded wheelbarrow, and be physically active for 3 hours ● Ability to fulfill all responsibilities listed in the "Feeding Shifts" section below Feeding Shifts Responsibilities during a feeding shift include setting up feed for each horse, putting hay outside in the paddocks, leading horses in and out of the barn, mucking the paddocks and stalls, filling water buckets and troughs, and cleaning up afterward. Feeding shifts begin around 7 AM and 3:00 PM. Shift length varies throughout the year but is roughly 2-3 hours. Volunteers are generally assigned one morning or afternoon shift per week, but it is also possible to be a sub. We ask for advance notice if you will be gone, so that we have time to find a sub for you. Feeder Training All prospective feeders participate in on-the-job training during a feeding shift or two. You will be paired with a staff member who will guide you through the process. For the safety of all, We Can Ride reserves the right to determine a volunteer's fitness for the role.
