    Description

    About the Role

ILO Group is seeking an accomplished and strategic Senior Managing Director to lead the development of innovative, high-quality instructional materials that advance learning outcomes and align with state standards. The Senior Managing Director will oversee the design, alignment, and implementation of curriculum and instructional frameworks across multiple projects, guiding a team of content experts and partnering closely with state and district leaders to ensure every deliverable reflects clarity, rigor, and instructional excellence.

    Who we are

ILO Group is a proudly women-owned education strategy and policy firm. We are a dedicated team of strategic partners and specialists who support school districts and states in executing on their biggest bets and their highest priority efforts. We work as members of our partners’ teams—operating side-by-side with the country’s leading educators, experts, and government partners.

Our work is as diverse as our partners’ ambitions are bold: we work across leadership development, comprehensive project management and implementation support, systems transformation, and more. We enable education leaders to be catalysts for enduring change that benefits their students, schools, and communities. In addition to technical assistance to districts and states, our expert team provides the capacity and expertise to power difference-making partnerships of our own: Women Leading Ed and The Forum for Educational Leadership.

    Why ILO Group

Our clients are state education agencies, school districts, and adjacent education organizations, including nonprofits and foundations, who are committed to implementing initiatives that improve student outcomes. In this role, you will work directly with these leaders and their teams to design, develop, and deliver high-quality instructional resources that can be implemented at scale.

You will join a team of high-performing and collaborative individuals who value excellence and integrity. As a senior member of the organization, you will have the opportunity to shape ILO Group’s instructional design strategy, expand our curriculum-focused offerings, and influence the future of teaching and learning at a systems level.

    Opportunity

    Strategic and Organizational Leadership

    • Serve as lead to ILO Group’s curriculum design and content projects, ensuring all materials meet rigorous instructional quality standards and are aligned to state frameworks.
    • Serve as a key member of the leadership team, helping to shape organizational priorities, manage firmwide strategy, and model ILO Group’s core values.
    • Oversee major internal initiatives that strengthen ILO Group’s expertise and reputation in curriculum and instruction.
    • Contribute to business development by cultivating strategic partnerships, identifying new opportunities, and supporting the growth of ILO Group’s client portfolio.

    Curriculum Design and Content Expertise

    • Lead the design, development, and refinement of curriculum content, instructional materials, and educator resources across multiple grade bands and content areas.
    • Ensure all content is aligned with applicable state standards, integrates best practices in pedagogy, and reflects diverse perspectives and inclusive learning principles.
    • Develop frameworks, templates, and quality assurance systems to maintain consistency and rigor across projects.
    • Provide expert guidance to clients and internal teams on curriculum adoption, implementation, and scaling.
    • Serve as a thought leader on instructional design, contributing to ILO Group’s national presence in the education field.

    Client and Project Management

    • Manage large-scale client engagements from inception through implementation, including scope, staffing, workplan, budget, and deliverables.
    • Provide strategic counsel to senior education leaders and state agency officials, guiding decisions related to curriculum quality, alignment, and adoption.
    • Anticipate client needs, address risks proactively, and ensure seamless communication between ILO and client teams.
    • Translate complex educational frameworks and research into actionable, “client-ready” products and recommendations.

    People Leadership and Team Development

    • Lead a team of curriculum developers, content specialists, and consultants to deliver on time and at the highest level of quality.
    • Serve as a mentor, coach, and role model across the organization, fostering a culture of accountability, feedback, and continuous learning.
    • Identify and nurture opportunities for collaboration between curriculum, leadership development, and research teams.

    Thought Leadership and Knowledge Sharing

    • Engage in national and state education networks to stay informed on emerging trends, policy shifts, and research in curriculum and instruction.
    • Share insights and best practices internally to strengthen ILO Group’s service quality and thought leadership.
    • Represent ILO Group publicly as a curriculum design expert through publications, presentations, or professional convenings.

    About You

The requirements of the position are:

    • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field preferred.
    • Experience:
      • 12–15+ years of professional experience, including at least 5 years leading curriculum design, content development, or instructional strategy initiatives at the district, state, or organizational level.
      • Demonstrated success managing large-scale curriculum development or standards alignment projects.
      • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and cultivate long-term client partnerships.
    • Skills and Competencies:
      • Deep expertise in curriculum design, content development, and instructional standards alignment.
      • Strong understanding of the K–12 education landscape, including state standards, assessment systems, and instructional best practices.
      • Exceptional communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to present confidently to senior audiences.
      • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and organizational abilities.
      • Adept at balancing big-picture strategy with hands-on project execution.

    Compensation

Salary starts at $155,000, depending on experience and qualifications, with full benefits and profit-sharing opportunities included.

    Why I do this work

Hear from some of our team on why they do this work as a team with their colleagues at ILO Group.

“I am the product of public school teachers who believed in my potential. As the daughter of immigrants with a humble upbringing, I was supported throughout my K-12 education by teachers and administrators who went the extra mile to ensure that my circumstances would not dictate the quality or rigor of my education. Although I was not statistically likely to persevere, I am my family’s first college graduate. Paying that goodwill forward to impact the trajectory of today’s students positively is why I do this work.”

“I do this work because I am passionate about rethinking our education system to make it work better for students and families. I love working alongside superintendents and their teams to help implement new ideas that make a direct positive impact on their students.”

“When I think of why I do this work, the first thing that comes to mind is something I have always been driven by: helping to support and create a more impactful and robust education system for students and educational leaders. Everyday, I wake up feeling motivated and energized by the fact that the work we do as a team directly impacts the future of thousands of students in this country, and I have the opportunity to be a part of the change. Seeing projects come to life and transforming the education system in a positive and effective manner is the most rewarding factor of the work.”

“I’m a proud product of public schools, and I believe every student should have access to the same high-quality education and opportunities I was fortunate to have. At ILO, I’m able to work towards that vision every day, partnering with K–12 system leaders to launch bold initiatives, build systems for lasting impact, and create the conditions necessary for success. It’s deeply rewarding to collaborate with passionate leaders to make a meaningful difference for students, families, and communities.”
