Coffee and Conversation Virtual Exchange

The “Coffee and Conversation” virtual exchange program was created to offer a dedicated global platform for young people to come together and talk about issues that matter to them. Whether it’s the rise of AI or the effects of climate change, we want to give young leaders and changemakers from the United States and globally opportunities to discuss tough topics and build connections in a safe and collaborative environment.

Why a Virtual Exchange?

Building on the Open Hands Initiative’s work to unite young people throughout the world for mutual exchange, this virtual exchange aims to further promote mutual respect and understanding across borders. Our hope is that the program will connect more people in more places thanks to its digital meeting place. It comes at a critical time, when young people are experiencing heightened divisions, both in person and online. By fostering dialogue and connection, the program seeks to address these divides and empower youth to build bridges of understanding.

How It Works

“Coffee & Conversation” starts with a training course on effective dialogue and how to have difficult conversations. The “Dialogue Training” course lays the foundation for engagement across difference by developing skills in active listening, perspective taking, and managing emotions.

After the training, participants unlock access to a variety of informal "Coffee Chats" that will allow them to connect, converse, and collaborate on topics of interest.

For those interested in deepening their engagement, we also offer advanced workshops on topics like negotiation and design thinking, as well as a speaker series that will bring participants face to face with experts and thought leaders.
