    Description

    Team Cabán believes that powerful public-facing communication is essential to building a safer, healthier, more just New York City. The Director of Communications for New York City Council Member Tiffany Cabán is responsible for overseeing all communications and press relations for the office. The Communications Director will work closely with the Council Member to effectively communicate the office’s vision, legislative priorities, and District updates. Under the supervision of the Chief of Staff, the Director of Communications will develop and establish Team Cabán’s voice as a leader within the broader movement for socialist-abolitionist governance.

    Major Responsibilities:

    • Craft and implement the office’s communications approach, setting goals and strategies for all areas of our communications work, both in the district and citywide
    • Develop and coordinate overall communications and narrative strategy for legislative, budget, and advocacy campaigns, with an eye towards elevating the Council Member’s key priorities and policy vision
    • Lead the office’s press work by developing strong relationships with reporters and editors, pitching and placing stories, responding to press inquiries, and identifying other communications opportunities that advance the goals of the office
    • Ideate, develop, film and edit direct-to-camera short-form videos for social media platforms
    • Coordinate the office’s presence across all social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc.)
    • Work with other Council offices, community partners, and advocacy organizations to coordinate effective communications strategies that advance shared policy, advocacy, and organizing goals
    • Plan and manage press conferences, draft and distribute press releases and statements, and follow up with media to ensure effective coverage
    • Work with the Council Member to collaboratively draft op-eds, speeches, public statements, and other written pieces
    • Coordinate constituent-focused communications, including a biannual newsletter, weekly e-newsletter, and e-blasts about local topics of particular concern to District 22 constituents
    • Collaborate with the Chief of Staff and the Legislative Director to advance policy and budget priorities through the use of innovative communication strategies and media campaigns
    • Collaborate with the team to design outreach materials like flyers and social media graphics

    The ideal candidate will have:

    • 5+ years of communications experience ideally in a government, electoral, advocacy or labor setting
    • Experience communicating about policy and advocacy issues a plus
    • Impeccable organizational skills and attention to detail, with excellent written and verbal communication
    • Demonstrated success with working on highly collaborative, cross-functional teams
    • Experience leading digital media strategy on a variety of social media platforms (esp. short form video)
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an ever-changing media landscape
    • Strong knowledge of the media landscape in New York City
    • Graphic design skills, including Canva and other design platforms
    • Working proficiency in Spanish a plus
