    FLSA: Full-Time, Salaried/Exempt

    Summary

    Founded in 2010 and based in Oakland, California, Acta Non Verba (ANV) elevates life for youth and their families through urban farming and access to the natural environment. Led primarily by women and People of Color, ANV creates safe, creative, and educational outdoor spaces for young people and community members to grow, thrive, and lead.

    ANV’s vision is a Future Paradise where youth have access to nourishing food, equitable opportunities, and a deep connection to the Earth. In 2024, ANV served over 1,200 children and families and operated on a $2.7 million dollar annual budget, with a goal to scale through community-based earned revenue and expanded philanthropic partnerships.

    The Executive Director is ANV’s chief strategist, community ambassador, and operational leader. This role is responsible for advancing ANV’s mission, securing and stewarding resources, supporting a vibrant and inclusive team culture, and fostering bold, youth-driven change. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and works collaboratively with staff, partners, and community stakeholders to sustain and grow ANV’s impact.

    Essential Duties &

    Responsibilities

    Leadership & Vision

    • Lead ANV’s strategic direction, values alignment, and programmatic priorities with an equity-centered, trauma-informed lens.
    • Represent ANV as a compelling voice in the movement for food sovereignty, youth empowerment, and environmental justice.

    Fundraising & Resource Development

    • Develop and implement a robust fundraising strategy including individual donors, major gifts, grants, earned income, corporate sponsorships, and capital campaigns.
    • Cultivate relationships with foundations, public agencies, corporate partners, and individual donors.
    • Empower Board Members and staff to act as storytellers of the ANV mission to help create fundraising opportunities.
    • Oversee the use of donor databases (Network for Good, FlipCause) and ensure accurate reporting, gift processing, and stewardship.

    Team & Organizational Management

    • Manage and support a diverse and dynamic team; directly manage senior staff.
    • Ensure inclusive and legally compliant HR practices; champion professional development, safety, and wellness across the organization.
    • Collaborate with the Board on governance, accountability, recruitment, and succession planning.

    Program Oversight

    • Ensure high-quality delivery of ANV programs such as Camp ANV, BeetBox CSA, and Youth Leadership initiatives.
    • Support program innovation, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

    Communications & Public Engagement

    • Oversee public relations, marketing, and community engagement strategies that increase visibility, promote earned income, and strengthen relationships.
    • Serve as ANV’s public spokesperson and head storyteller, sharing compelling and relevant stories in person and via marketing efforts to engage donors and attract new community partners and future volunteers.
    • Participate in community events, press, and advocacy, as a champion of ANV’s mission.

    Finance & Compliance

    • Lead long- and short-term financial planning with support from the Finance & Operations team.
    • Ensure organizational compliance with local, state, and federal laws, including IRS 501(c)(3) regulations.
    • Prepare and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee.

    Knowledge

    & Skills

    Required

    • At least 5 years of senior nonprofit leadership, preferably in youth development, food justice, environmental education, or community development.
    • Proven success in fundraising and donor cultivation.
    • Strong leadership skills rooted in equity, accountability, and collective care.
    • Excellent communication skills—written, verbal, and interpersonal.
    • Tech Stack: G-Suite, Airtable, Quickbooks, Salesforce, Planning Center, Network for Good, and FlipCause (or similar fundraising software).
    • Deep knowledge of nonprofit governance, budgeting, and compliance.
    • Commitment to anti-racism, disability justice, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, and accessibility.

    Preferred

    • Experience leading a capital campaign.
    • Experience working with or on a Nonprofit Board of Directors, specifically with Board development and member recruitment.
    • Personal or professional connection to Oakland or similar urban communities.
    • Experience with trauma-informed youth programming, restorative practices, or cooperative development.

    Work Environment

    & ADA Accessibility

    • This position requires occasional travel and weekend or evening hours.
    • Work is performed in both outdoor farm environments and office settings (including remote work).

    • This position requires the ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and navigate farm terrain.

    Compensation

    & Benefits

    • 100% Employer Paid Full Health Care and Dental Benefits
    • Salary between $110,000–$135,000 annually, DOE
    • Weekly CSA share of fresh produce during harvest season (Mar.-Dec.)
    • IRA retirement savings program through CalSavers
    • Other benefits are potentially available depending on the financial growth and stability of the organization.

    This farm is in the city of Oakland, California, where there are many languages spoken. The most common languages spoken around the farm are English, Pashto, Arabic, and Spanish. A bilingual candidate is preferred.
