    Since 1976, Circuit Rider Community Services (CRCS) has been providing multifaceted services designed to address the interdependent links between the health of the individual person, the greater community, and the natural environment.     About the Position

    The Finance Director serves as the senior financial leader for Circuit Rider Community Services, a growing nonprofit evolving its youth justice work to include upstream prevention programs, alongside ecological restoration services, transportation for seniors, and community-based education. The Finance Director provides strategic financial leadership, partners closely with the Executive Director as a collaborative thought partner, oversees the organization’s fiscal health, and ensures strong financial systems that support CRCS’s mission and long-term sustainability.

    The Finance Director partners closely with the CEO to drive organizational growth, strengthen financial operations, and support leadership decision-making through clear analysis, modeling, and reporting. This role supervises the Bookkeeper and oversees all accounting, grants and contract compliance, payroll and benefits administration, and financial systems.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    Financial Strategy & Organizational Leadership

    • Develop and implement financial strategies that support CRCS's mission, program expansion, and long-term sustainability.
    • Partner with the CEO in strategic planning, scenario modeling, financial forecasting, and capital planning.
    • Lead the annual budgeting process, working with program team to develop accurate budgets and multi-year financial models.
    • Present financial updates and analyses to the CEO for the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.

    Financial Management & Operations

    • Oversee all accounting operations, including month-end close, reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, and general ledger accuracy.
    • Manage cash flow, reserves, and financial projections to ensure organizational stability.
    • Maintain strong internal controls, financial policies, and compliance systems.
    • Supervise payroll processing and benefits administration in coordination with external service providers.
    • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, management reports, and audit materials.

    Grants, Contracts & Compliance

    • Lead financial oversight for all government, foundation, and fee-for-service contracts.
    • Prepare and manage grant budgets, allowable cost tracking, invoicing, and reimbursement documentation.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and county funder requirements—including Sonoma County Probation, SRVPP, grants, state workforce programs, etc.
    • Develop internal systems to ensure program staff understand fiscal responsibilities tied to grants and contracts.
    • Serve as the primary contact for auditors, grant monitors, and fiscal review teams.

    Risk Management, Insurance & Legal Coordination

    • Oversee organizational insurance policies (liability, property, D&O, workers compensation, auto, volunteer drivers).
    • Assess fiscal risks and implement mitigation strategies.
    • Support contract review and negotiation in collaboration with the CEO and legal counsel.
    • Technology, Systems & Infrastructure
    • Oversee financial software, including QuickBooks and payroll/benefit platforms.
    • Evaluate and implement improved financial systems as the organization grows.
    • Work collaboratively to align finance systems with CRM, program databases, and reporting tools.

    Leadership, Collaboration & Staff Development

    • Supervise the Bookkeeper and support their professional development, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in day-to-day accounting.
    • Build financial literacy among program directors through training, coaching, and tools.
    • Support a collaborative, solution-oriented culture rooted in CRCS's values of youth empowerment, equity, and community service.
    • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board, and leadership team.

    Professional Experience/Qualifications

    Required

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
    • Minimum 2-3 years of progressive finance experience, preferably nonprofit financial management, including general ledger maintenance.
    • Demonstrated or related experience with grant accounting, cost allocation, or government contract compliance.
    • Proficiency with QuickBooks (or comparable accounting systems) and payroll platforms.
    • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit audit standards.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

    Preferred

    • CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced training.
    • Experience supervising staff and managing cross-functional financial processes.
    • Experience working with justice-involved youth, social services, workforce programs, or environmental services.
    • Experience in a growing or multi-program nonprofit with diverse funding streams.
