National Headquarters (NHQ) supports the work of The Salvation Army across the United States and internationally by providing leadership, resources, and strategic support to territorial and local operations.

    Internship Overview

    The Internship program provides an opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain hands‑on professional experience while supporting the work of The Salvation Army. This internship is designed to offer meaningful exposure to nonprofit operations, project‑based work, and professional development in a mission‑driven organization.

    The intern will work closely with staff members and may contribute to research, analysis, administrative support, program development, and special projects, depending on departmental needs and the intern’s interests.

    The Advancement Generalist Intern will support fundraising administrations for the Advancement department in NCRD, including assisting the Assistant National Community Relations and Development Secretary and the Fund Development Director with day-to-day administrative tasks, financial tracking, reporting and partnership administration tasks.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Advisory Organization Development Resources
      • Review existing training content on the AO HUB and compare this to the current needs of advisory organizations as reflected in the Standards of Excellence and Lead Learning Library. Create curriculum and content to meet these needs.
      • Identify potential sources of additional resources to fill gaps.
      • Refresh or overhaul older content to make it relevant to present day circumstances.
    • National Advisory Board Resources:
      • Review board management software and find ways that the NAB and the AOD Committee can use it more effectively.
      • Document workflows in National Advisory Board meeting processes and create systems in project management software to streamline implementation.
    • Better Together Conference Resources:
      • Assist with planning and preparing materials for AO sessions for the Better Together 2027 conference.
      • Support logistics planning for the conference.
    • Assist the OPMD, AO Manager and Administrative Specialist with administrative tasks as necessary.

    Learning Opportunities

    This internship is intended to be a learning experience. The intern will:

    • Gain exposure to nonprofit and/or faith‑based organizational operations
    • Develop professional skills such as communication, research, time management, and collaboration
    • Work under the guidance of experienced professionals
    • Establish learning goals at the start of the internship and receive feedback throughout the summer

    Qualifications

    • Understanding of board leadership and management is helpful.
    • Excellent attention to detail.
    • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Some experience with databases.
    • Knowledge of learning management systems and course development preferred.
    • Good written and communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Ability to conduct online research.
    • Bachelor’s degree or degree in process.
    • Able to provide references.
    • Commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army.

    Time Commitment
