    About Humanities New York

Humanities New York connects people and communities across the state through conversation, reflection, and storytelling. From book discussions and podcasts to community forums and video interviews, we use the humanities to spark civic engagement and bring people together.

    About the Role

We’re looking for a creative, media-savvy, and detail-oriented intern to join our team this winter. This role is perfect for someone who loves creating digital content—whether that means editing short videos, writing compelling captions, or shaping stories that help ideas reach the public.

As part of HNY’s growing digital strategy, you’ll help translate the humanities into multimedia storytelling—working across social media, our website, newsletters, and video platforms. You’ll gain real-world experience in content creation, campaign management, and digital strategy for a statewide nonprofit organization.

If you’re looking to build a portfolio in marketing and communications while contributing to meaningful public storytelling, this internship is for you.

    What You’ll Do

    Create & Edit Multimedia Content

    • Design clear, engaging graphics or short-form video content using Canva Pro.
    • Edit and refine video footage for YouTube and social platforms, using iMovie or other accessible tools.
    • Recommend sustainable new tools or workflows for video and content editing.
    • Ensure all visual media meets accessibility and brand standards.

    Manage Web & Social Channels

    • Update and maintain content on HNY’s new Squarespace website.
    • Build and maintain advance social media calendars to help the team plan efficiently.
    • Schedule posts across Instagram, LinkedIn, and X/Twitter using platform-native tools or schedulers.
    • Tag partners and monitor engagement, adjusting strategies based on audience insights.

    Design & Deliver Campaigns

    • Write and format monthly Mailchimp newsletters highlighting HNY programs and stories.
    • Organize and segment contact lists for accuracy and clarity.
    • Develop branded templates and assets for recurring communications.

    Strengthen Digital Infrastructure

    • Help refine internal systems for tracking content, updating assets, and managing marketing workflows.
    • Create internal guides or calendars to make ongoing communications more efficient and consistent.

    Collaborate Creatively

    • Work closely with HNY’s programs team to translate their work into engaging, public-facing stories.
    • Bring curiosity and initiative to team meetings—sharing new ideas, tools, and approaches.

You’re a Great Fit If You:

    • Have entry-level experience or coursework in communications, marketing, media, or journalism.
    • Enjoy visual storytelling, content creation, and project organization.
    • Are proficient with Canva Pro, Mailchimp, and Google Workspace.
    • Are curious about Squarespace or website content management.
    • Can plan ahead, manage multiple tasks, and build efficient calendars.
    • Are eager to learn, adapt, and help improve systems while bringing creativity to the table.

    What You’ll Gain

    • Hands-on experience managing digital communications for a statewide nonprofit.
    • A portfolio of creative work across graphics, video, web, and newsletters.
    • Mentorship and collaboration with HNY’s communications and programs teams.
    • A deeper understanding of how thoughtful storytelling strengthens civic life.
