    Description

    Position Overview

The New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute seeks a dynamic, thoughtful, and capable Executive Director to lead the organization through an exciting period of institutional renewal. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide day-to-day operational leadership while partnering closely with the Board to advance strategic priorities—notably, a comprehensive rebranding and revitalization effort that spans NYPSI’s physical space, digital presence, public programs, and external visibility. This role is ideal for a senior nonprofit leader who combines strong operational and financial acumen with creativity, strategic vision, and a collaborative leadership style.

    Responsibilities

    Organizational Leadership & Operations

    • Provide overall leadership of NYPSI’s administrative and operational functions, ensuring the smooth and effective functioning of educational programs, the treatment center, facilities, and technology/media activities.
    • Supervise and support staff across program administration, facilities, and communications, fostering a collegial and mission-driven work culture.
    • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors, providing regular updates on organizational operations, finances, and strategic initiatives.

    Strategy, Rebranding & Institutional Renewal

    • Partner with the Board to develop and implement a cohesive rebranding strategy across all public-facing platforms, including physical space, website, social media, public outreach, and recruitment.
    • Collaborate with communications, web, and social media consultants to strengthen NYPSI’s digital presence and broaden its public reach.
    • Work with the Board to reimagine and revitalize NYPSI’s historic building on East 82nd Street, aligning the physical environment with the institution’s contemporary mission and future goals.

    Financial Management & Oversight

    • Develop and oversee an annual operating budget of approximately $1 million, in close collaboration with the Treasurer and outside accounting and auditing firms.
    • Monitor financial performance, manage cash flow, and ensure sound fiscal practices and compliance.
    • Translate financial information into clear, high-level insights for the Board to support strategic decision-making.

    Fundraising & External Partnerships

    • Think creatively and strategically about fundraising opportunities and revenue diversification.
    • Serve as NYPSI’s internal leader for coordinating fundraising efforts. Engage with Board members and donors, supporting cultivation, stewardship, and special initiatives. Collaborate with fundraising consultants on campaigns to achieve goals. Preference given to candidates with fundraising experience.

    Programs, Calendar & Facilities

    • Oversee the coordination of NYPSI’s annual calendar of academic, clinical, and public activities, including trainee admissions and graduations, class scheduling, CME accreditation, scientific meetings, and social events.
    • Manage the maintenance, repair, and operation of NYPSI’s building, including oversight of office rentals to practicing therapists and relationships with vendors and service providers.
    • Oversee rental of NYPSI space to outside organizations, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities.

    Qualifications & Experience

    • Demonstrated experience as an Executive Director or in a senior leadership role within a nonprofit organization.
    • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in business, public administration, or a related field preferred.
    • Strong operational and financial management skills, with the ability to interpret and communicate financial information at a strategic level.
    • Proven ability to think creatively and strategically, particularly in moments of organizational change or growth.
    • Experience working closely with a Board of Directors in a collaborative governance structure.
    • Interest in or familiarity with psychoanalysis, psychology, or mental health is welcome but not required.
    • This position is primarily or fully in-office in Manhattan; minimal travel is required.

    Benefits

Benefits include medical and dental insurance, participation in a TIAA retirement plan, and generous paid time off. NYPSI offices are closed for the last two weeks of December and the last three weeks of August.
