    Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.

    Apex serves approximately 2,500 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Apex is seeking multiple Mentoring Managers to lead school-year mentoring programs serving either middle school or high school youth across our Lower East Side, Manhattan and Sunset Park, Brooklyn sites. These programs pair young people with trained adult volunteers through a blend of one-on-one mentorship and group programming focused on youth well-being, community engagement, and academic and postsecondary success.

    Mentoring Managers are responsible for program implementation, staff supervision, volunteer engagement, and youth support at their assigned age group and location. This role reports to the Associate Director of Mentoring Programs and works closely with youth, program staff, volunteers, schools, and internal support teams.

    Openings may be available across multiple sites and age groups.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Program Management & Supervision (50%)

    • Oversee day-to-day implementation of mentoring programming for assigned age group and site, including workshops, family orientations/workshops, volunteer trainings, participant management, group activities, and special large group events such as field trips
    • Support program design and curriculum implementation aligned with Apex’s mentoring framework and youth development goals
    • Facilitate or co-facilitate group workshops and community-building activities during Saturday programming
    • Ensure high-quality, consistent programming across the school year and program planning during the summer
    • Collaborate with other Mentoring Managers to support cohesive programming across grade levels and sites
    • Maintain and establish strong, collaborative relationships with partner schools and community organizations at the assigned site
    • Supervise and support program staff, including Coordinators and interns, through regular check-ins, coaching, and performance feedback
    • Foster a positive, collaborative team culture grounded in youth-centered and trauma-informed practices

    Mentee Recruitment, Intake & Support (20%)

    • Recruit, intake, and enroll youth participants through partner schools and community organizations
    • Manage a caseload of approximately 30-40 mentor-mentee matches, providing relationship support at least twice annually
    • Identify and respond to high-needs youth situations, including relationship challenges, attendance concerns, and engagement barriers
    • Partner with the Mental Health Team to support mentee mental health needs and referrals
    • Collaborate with the College & Career Success team to integrate academic, college, and career-related programming and resources for youth in high school (applicable only to HSMP roles)

    Mentor Recruitment & Management (20%)

    • Support recruitment, intake, and onboarding of adult volunteer mentors in collaboration with program staff
    • Oversee mentor-mentee matching processes for assigned caseload
    • Provide ongoing guidance, coaching, and support to mentors to strengthen mentoring relationships
    • Partner with the mentoring team to plan and implement volunteer trainings, appreciation events, and team-wide activities

    Data, Evaluation & Administration (10%)

    • Support program data collection and evaluation in partnership with the Associate Director of Research and Evaluation
    • Ensure timely and accurate data entry into Salesforce and other tracking systems, including enrollment, attendance, and engagement
    • Use data and feedback to inform program improvements
    • Participate in program, departmental, and organizational meetings as required

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Positions may vary slightly based on age group (middle school vs. high school) and site needs (Lower East Side and Sunset Park)
    • BA or BS preferred;
    • 3-5 years of experience working with youth required;
    • Program management experience preferred.
    • 1-2 years of experience supervising staff;
    • Strong oral and written communication skills;
    • Strong ability and interest in building community and genuine relationships;
    • Proactive nature and self-starter, ability to problem-solve autonomously;
    • Enjoys working closely with a team, as well as independently;
    • Saturday availability during the school year is required; limited summer availability is expected
    • Spoken fluency in Mandarin and written competency in Chinese are preferred but not required.

    Paid time off: In the first year of employment, employees are eligible for approximately a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid holidays, org-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July, 5 sick days per year, 3 personal days a year).
