    Description

    Reports to: Manager, Institutional Giving

Womankind uses the multidimensionality of our Asian heritage to work alongside survivors of gender-based violence as they build a path to healing. We are working tirelessly to create a future where we Rise Above Violence and our communities can innovate towards collective well-being, restoration, and social justice. In addition to promoting healing and safety through service provision, Womankind promotes gender justice through research, coalition building, policy analysis, and community education and mobilization.

The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build Womankind’s capacity of the Development Department to leverage resources by enhancing grant research, writing, and reporting processes across foundation, corporation, state, and local government institutional sources. The VISTA member will participate in various aspects of the grantmaking and management process including prospect research; drafting Letters of Intent (LOIs); drafting full grant applications; and creating, gathering, and organizing supplemental proposal documents. They will learn about Womankind’s current processes, monitor areas of improvement, and, where appropriate, develop new ways of doing things that create more efficiency, effectiveness, and/or reach.

    Essential Functions

    • Enhance research capacity to identify and cultivate new institutional funding prospects
      • Conduct research to identify potential foundations, corporate, state, and local government funders whose priorities align with Womankind’s mission and program areas and add to Womankind’s regularly updated prospect list
      • Create a more efficient and effective means of recording and communicating prospects. Womankind’s current spreadsheet tracker is cumbersome. We welcome VISTAs with creative solutions who can develop a more efficient system.
    • Strengthen fundraising capacity by improving the grant application writing process
      • Attend bi-weekly grant planning meetings with the Institutional Giving team to stay informed of current and upcoming grant deadlines, next steps, and deliverables
      • Draft and revise Letters of Inquiry, cover letters, proposal narratives, and other grant narrative content
      • Evaluate Womankind’s current grant writing process and develop suggestions for improvement
      • Work with the Institutional Giving team to implement approved changes to the grant writing process
    • Enhance Womankind’s grant management capacity by participating in and evaluating grant management and reporting processes
      • Draft reports and update letters to funders
      • Attend internal and external meetings as needed to maintain relationships with current funders and learn about the grant registration, reporting, and maintenance processes
      • Evaluate Womankind’s current grant management and reporting processes and suggest improvements
      • Work with the Institutional Giving team to implement approved changes to the grant management and reporting process

    Qualifications

    • To serve in AmeriCorps VISTA, applicants must have one of the following citizenship statuses: U.S. Citizens, U.S. Nationals, Lawful Permanent Residents, or persons legally residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status. This is a requirement set by AmeriCorps.
    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
    • Excellent ability to communicate orally and in writing to a wide range of people (professional donor relations)
    • Effective planning, time management, and organizational skills
    • Familiarity with non-profit administrative work, grant writing, and research
    • Proven ability to maintain good working relationships with a variety of people and groups
    • Highly resourceful, self-directed, and flexible with excellent team coordination abilities
    • Must be able to meet strict deadlines and adapt to changing deadlines
    • Knowledge about dynamics of gender-based violence, such as domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking, in immigrant communities preferred
    • Deep commitment to Womankind’s mission

    Schedule

The start date for this position is April 6, 2026 and may be subject to change, depending on AmeriCorps’ flexibility, availability, and federal budget to place a candidate.

This position is a full-time commitment (40 hours/week) and lasts for one year (12 consecutive months). The VISTA will work a schedule of Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm or 10 am-6 pm. For the first month, VISTAs will be expected to be in-person 2-3 times a week. After the first month, VISTAs can transition to a hybrid schedule of 2 days in person and 3 days remote, although this will be at the discretion of the direct VISTA supervisor. Members in school must have their courses approved by their direct VISTA supervisor to ensure no overlap between classes and VISTA service. Please note, AmeriCorps is a federally funded program, and federal changes may impact programming (such as government shutdowns).

    Location

Womankind is based in New York City, so it will be expected that the VISTA can commute in person to our sites. The VISTA will primarily be based out of our Headquarters, located in the Financial District of Manhattan. Occasional travel to our community offices in Brooklyn (Sunset Park) and Queens (we are in the process of moving); and confidential emergency housing (shelter) may occur throughout the service term. All Womankind locations are accessible through public transportation.
