Position Description:
Juma is hiring a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to grow the organization's operational capacity and execute strategy as we continue to scale. Reporting to the CEO, the COO will oversee internal operations and programs, working with leadership to create and implement strategies, policies, and procedures that drive performance and efficiency.
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for overseeing daily operations, implementing business strategies, and managing Juma’s Human Resources, Programs, Enterprise Development, and Data and Evaluation departments to ensure efficiency and growth. The COO will work with the CEO and executive team to execute the company's vision and make key operational decisions. The COO is responsible for optimizing workflows, managing operational budgets, and ensuring that all departments work is in alignment with Juma’s goals.
As a key member of Juma’s executive team, the COO is jointly responsible for execution of the agency vision in collaboration with senior leadership, and the design and implementation of organization-wide objectives and goals. The CEO is seeking a strategic thought partner to review, analyze, develop, and promote the agency’s diverse revenue streams, build upon a positive organizational culture, and proactively maintain the agency infrastructure. The COO will serve as primary liaison to the impact and enterprise board committees. The ideal candidate is a mission-driven, experienced leader with a strategic and process-oriented approach, capable of scaling the organization and fostering a robust performance culture across various teams.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategy, Vision, and Leadership
- Function as a strategic business partner with the CEO and other senior staff to provide advice on lines of business, budgeting, and policy matters.
- Serve as a leadership liaison to the Board of Directors by presenting critical and administrative operations and program information.
- Develop and implement short-and long-range operations and program goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
- Evaluate potential business partners and revenue streams for cost benefit and return on investment, using double bottom line analysis.
Staff Supervision and Talent Development
- Supervise four direct reports: Chief People Officer & General Council, Sr. Director of Data Systems & Evaluation, Director of Impact and Director of Enterprise Development.
- Provide leadership and problem solving in alignment with Juma’s values.
- Build Juma’s culture to ensure shared values, expectations, goals, and drive excellence.
- Regularly review Juma’s program design and outcomes and develop innovative programs as needs emerge.
- Initiate change management activities in alignment with CEO and strategic directions.
- Build talent acquisition and retention strategy, mentor and develop staff, using a supportive and collaborative approach, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and monitor and evaluate results.
- Oversee the knowledge sharing strategy across Juma’s sites, ensuring that practice knowledge is standardized and easily accessible and that regions can learn from one another and share best practices.
Operations
- Design and implement business strategies, plans, and procedures to support operational efficiency and organizational growth. Collaborate with the CEO to set and execute the company's strategic vision.
- Oversee and manage the organization's day-to-day operations to ensure objectives are met. This includes optimizing workflows, managing assigned departments, and ensuring seamless integration across functions.
- Monitor key metrics, financial reports, and performance to ensure targets are met within budget. Take action to improve performance and achieve financial goals.
- Manage and oversee department budgets and financial reporting related to their assigned departments. Work with the finance department to ensure annual budgets are aligned to organizational goals and activities.
- Initiate and implement process improvements related to workflows, quality, safety, and overall efficiency.
- Make real-time operational decisions to address issues and ensure the company runs smoothly. Serve as a key partner to the CEO on both short-term and long-term challenges.
- Recommend and implement systems to improve agency operations; and provide for the successful integration of agency-wide activities.
- Ensure Juma’s technology and infrastructure adequately support business strategy.
- Build efficiency through data integration across Juma’s data systems.
Additional Responsibilities:
- As with all staff positions at Juma Ventures, the COO will have direct, firsthand involvement in all areas of the organization, including time spent working in the enterprises, participating in program delivery, and developing relationships with Juma’s youth.
- Aligning activities to Juma’s “double bottom-line” commitment of promoting both people & profits
- Contribute to contributed revenue development efforts, particularly in developing strategy, developing proposals, budgets, and work plans, and assisting in funder relationship management.
- Engage with key strategic partners nationally and internationally to share learnings and to build the field, participating in convenings with thought leaders and representing Juma externally in these discussions.
- Occasionally travel to replicate, expand, network, liaise, manage staff, present at conferences on Juma’s behalf.
Qualifications:
- Strong work ethic & passion for working to provide opportunities to youth.
- Senior leadership experience with an organization-wide perspective
- Demonstrated ability to lead organizational change and capacity building efforts.
- Experience in successfully managing/coaching a diverse team of individuals.
- Proficiency in long-term strategic planning and short-term plan implementation
- Familiarity with nonprofit fiscal management -and budgeting processes
- Demonstrated effectiveness in designing, implementing, & evaluating youth programs
- Great familiarity with the fundraising process and its connection to youth services
- Strong knowledge of the field of youth development -- models, programs, funders, etc.
- Experience working with a nonprofit Board of Directors
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work across sectors for a comprehensive youth and economic development.

Starting Salary: 160-185k
Classification: Full-time, Exempt
Hours/Week: 40 hours
Education: Master’s required in related discipline
Years of Experience: Minimum 10 yrs. of experience in roles that demonstrate nonprofit management, youth development, and strong managerial /leadership experience.
