    Description

    The Strategic Communications Director serves as a key leadership bridge between the Chief of Advocacy & Community Engagement and the operational communications team, providing direct supervision and strategic coordination across communications, advocacy, and data functions. This role transforms HC One's narrative change efforts by integrating storytelling, data visualization, and advocacy messaging into a cohesive strategy that amplifies community voices and advances birth equity through compelling, accessible communications.

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategic Communications Leadership

    • Lead the development and implementation of HC One's comprehensive communications strategy
    • Oversee organizational messaging, branding, and external communications across all platforms
    • Ensure all communications reflect HC One's values and commitment to equity and community leadership
    • Direct digital strategy, including website, social media, and email communications
    • Guide media relations and public affairs efforts to increase organizational visibility and influence

    Narrative Change & Storytelling

    • Lead the development of narrative change strategies that advance birth equity and challenge inequitable systems
    • Identify and analyze dominant narratives that perpetuate inequities in maternal health
    • Create counter-narratives that center community experiences, wisdom, and solutions
    • Develop messaging frameworks that effectively communicate complex issues in accessible ways
    • Ensure all narrative approaches are grounded in racial equity principles and community leadership

    Data Communication & Visualization

    • Direct the translation of program data and research into compelling visual storytelling
    • Oversee the development of data dashboards, infographics, and other visual tools
    • Guide the integration of data and narrative to strengthen advocacy messages
    • Ensure data storytelling approaches are accessible to diverse audiences
    • Collaborate with data staff to identify key metrics and stories that demonstrate impact

    Requirements

    • Background in health communications or public health narrative change
    • Experience with digital storytelling, multimedia content creation, or visual design
    • Understanding of policy advocacy and communications for social change
    • 5+ years of experience in communications, media, public relations, or advocacy roles
    • 2+ years of supervisory or team leadership experience; experience managing teams in advocacy or nonprofit environments
    • Demonstrated expertise in strategic communications and narrative development
    • Experience with data visualization and translating complex information for diverse audiences
    • Strong understanding of racial equity principles and their application to communications
    • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, coordinate across teams, and lead staff
    • Experience with digital communications platforms and social media strategy

    • Knowledge of media landscapes and journalist relationships
    • Experience managing teams in advocacy or nonprofit environments
    • Background in community-based storytelling or participatory media approaches
