About Urban Peace Movement (UPM)
Urban Peace Movement builds youth leadership in Oakland and the East Bay to transform the culture and conditions that drive violence and mass incarceration in low-income communities of color. UPM uses an approach we call "Healing-Centered Youth Organizing" to support young people to feel self-confident and hopeful while empowering them to work for healing, racial justice, and equity.
UPM has multiple youth organizing and leadership development programs. The first, “DetermiNation,” is a young Black men’s circle for directly-impacted ‘transitioning-aged,’ young men (ages 17-25), The second leadership track, “Leaders in Training” (LIT), is a multi-racial youth organizing and leadership program for high-school aged youth which has an Oakland site and a site in southern Alameda County. The third leadership program is our Youth Organizing Social Justice Steering Committee made up of young people from across our programs who help to coordinate programs, make higher level decisions for, and take on higher levels of leadership for the organization.
