The work is performed primarily in a remote setting with a goal of moving to a hybrid remote/ in-person workplace over time. We are looking for someone in the Sacramento area.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    The Development Manager position is a key team partner for the organization. This position works with the Executive Director, Programs Director, Programs Coordinator, and Board to ensure robust and diverse financial stability for the organization. This role includes fundraising responsibilities – including grant proposal writing and management, donor stewardship, and cultivation of sponsorship and new fundraising opportunities. This position will be supported by skilled and experienced fundraising consultants and staff to help with strategy and goal-setting, but is expected to handle the nitty-gritty of database management, donor appreciation, and tracking. In partnership with the PR/Communications consultant and organization staff, this role also includes elements of general organizational advancement to promote the visibility of the organization and its connection to our community, members, supporters, and stakeholders.

    This position reports directly to Eldra Jackson, III, Executive Director, and is also utilized by our Program Director and our consultant team (marketing, advancement, and capacity-building) as needed.

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position is primarily an administrative, fundraising, clerical role: it is not a programming role. Specific duties under these areas include but are not limited to:

    Grant Writing

    • Research and solicit funding opportunities, including private and public grants and contracts.
    • Provide support for grant tracking for Development Consultant and Capital Campaign Manager.
    • Write grant proposals, applications, and reports for government and private foundation grants, with the support of the Development Consultant, Capital Campaign Manager, and/or Executive Director.
    • Engage in outreach and relationship-building as appropriate to develop and maintain good relationships with funders.
    • Support the year-end giving campaign. This includes coordinating with the communications team, Capital Campaign Manager and Program Coordinator to draft copy, ensure scheduled distribution, and secure all needed assets.
    • Create and maintain a grants tracker, to ensure timely submission of funding requests and reports, including Capital Campaign grants.

    Donor Stewardship:

    • In partnership with the Executive Director, Development Consultant, and Programs Coordinator, develop the cultivation strategy and annual donor cultivation plan, and ensure the effective execution of stewardship efforts for Major Donors, including multiple touch points throughout the year.
    • Ensure data entry in the donor database management system is accurate and updated, and generate reports and analysis to support development and fundraising as needed. (Network for Good experience preferred)
    • Draft, send and record thank-you letters and any other donor appreciation materials/efforts.
    • Coordinate with the Capital Campaign team to provide support for Capital Campaign donor stewardship.

    Advancement

    • Work with the Executive Director and IC team to develop an annual budget, as well as an annual fundraising plan that supports the budget.
    • Work with Executive Director, Development Consultant, Capital Campaign Manager, and Board to develop new fundraising strategies and ideas as they emerge.
    • Work with the marketing and communications team to oversee creation of fundraising materials as well as recognition materials for supporters.
    • Work with the IC team to draft, review, and finalize Annual Report.

    Board & ED support

    • Provide support to the Finance Committee re. revenue and prospective grants
    • Support year-end audit
    • Work with the Advancement Committee and staff to support and cultivate board participation.

    QUALIFICATIONS / ESSENTIAL SKILLS & ABILITIES

    • 2-3 years of experience working in development for a nonprofit
    • A self-starter who effectively self-manages projects with strong organizing and time-management skills
    • Enthusiasm for the organization and its mission
    • Proficiency with Excel/Google sheets, Google Drive and Google forms, Network for Good, Canva, Eventbrite, Zoom required
    • Proficiency with Quickbooks is an asset
    • Sound interpersonal skills – we collaborate with a broad range of partners and participants, a successful candidate will be comfortable with a wide range of people
    • Strong writing skills, including grant writing experience
    • Unquestionable personal code of ethics, integrity, and trust

    COMPENSATION

    This is a full-time hourly position. Salary is $30/hour; estimated at $62,400 annually. Benefits include generous holiday/vacation policies, 401K matching.
