Bread for the City is a federally qualified health center (FQHC) in Washington, DC, dedicated to helping residents living with low incomes develop power to determine the future of their communities. We provide comprehensive medical, dental, vision, behavioral health, and social services to address both health needs and the social determinants that drive health outcomes. Our patients often face barriers such as housing and food insecurity, trauma, and systemic inequities. We are committed to delivering care that is compassionate, respectful, and grounded in health equity.

    Position Summary

Bread for the City is seeking a part-time eye care provider for a new clinic location that is a part of an expansion of our established vision services currently offered at the NW DC site.

The associate eye care provider will deliver high-quality eye care, including comprehensive eye exams, diagnosis and management of ocular and systemic eye diseases, prescribing treatment and corrective lenses, and providing patient education. The role also involves collaboration with an interdisciplinary team to manage site-threatening chronic conditions.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide comprehensive eye care including medical and routine eye exams from pediatric to geriatric patient populations
    • Manage and co-manage a variety of cases with attention to existing systemic medical conditions and social determinants of health
    • Collaborate closely with primary care providers, behavioral health providers, case managers, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team
    • Deliver patient-centered, trauma-informed care that builds trust and supports patient engagement
    • Help establish and grow a new satellite clinic, including contributing to clinical workflows and care processes
    • Document care accurately using eClinicalWorks (eCW), our electronic health record system
    • Participate in ongoing learning related to health equity, social injustice, and the structural factors affecting patient health

    Clinical Environment

    • Brand-new clinic space
    • Fully stocked digital exam lane with new equipment including fundus photography, OCT, and perimeter
    • Opportunity to help shape clinic operations and vision care delivery from the ground up
    • Integrated, team-based care setting with on-site primary care and support services
    • No on-call coverage required

    Ideal Candidate Qualifications

    • Doctor of Optometry (OD) or medical degree (MD or DO) with board certification in Ophthalmology
    • Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in the District of Columbia
    • Interested in helping build and grow a new practice
    • Prior experience in community health or safety-net settings preferred
    • Openness to learning about social injustice, structural inequities, and their impact on health outcomes
    • Comfortable managing a dynamic range of medically and socially complex patients
    • Collaborative and team-oriented, with the ability to work closely with primary care and support staff
    • Self-motivated with strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
    • Compassionate, patient-centered, and mission-aligned
    • Experience with eClinicalWorks (eCW) preferred but not required
