    About the Role:

    Position: The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Program Team.

    Job Summary: The Director of Development is responsible for leading and managing the fundraising and development activities of the organization. This includes designing and implementing fundraising strategies, cultivating relationships with donors and supporters, grant writing and management, and organizing fundraising events. This role is critical in leading the strategy to engage new and diverse sponsors as PiAf enters into a phase of expansion.

    Essential Responsibilities

    Relationship Management and Donor Cultivation

    • In collaboration with the Executive Director, cultivate and maintain relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and other potential funding sources of Princeton in Africa.
    • Communicate Princeton in Africa’s mission, vision, and impact to potential donors and stakeholders.
    • Manage spring & winter appeals.
    • Research and design appeals and special campaigns.
    • Work with the alumni board to develop and implement yearly alumni campaigns.
    • Track all donations and manage donor correspondence throughout the year.
    • Manage all donor records and mailing lists, including the CRM system of PiAf (ELEO 2.0).
    • Manage reporting to donors throughout the year, including managing communications from sponsored Fellows.
    • Conduct foundation, corporation, and other prospect research, and identify additional fundraising opportunities that fit within our mission. The focus is to diversify the geographic locations we fundraise in.
    • Track monthly financial information & prepare reports for the Executive Director & accountant as needed.

    Fundraising and Strategic Leadership

    • Participate in leadership and strategic planning meetings to develop a fundraising strategy that meets annual revenue targets for Princeton in Africa.
    • In collaboration with the Executive Director, develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with Princeton in Africa’s mission, goals, and financial needs.
    • Analyze and assess the effectiveness of Princeton in Africa’s fundraising strategies and make recommendations for improvement.
    • Develop an African Philanthropy fundraising strategy.
    • With supervision of the Executive Director, develop and manage the fundraising budget, ensuring financial goals are met and resources are allocated effectively.
    • Monitor fundraising expenses and revenue to ensure alignment with budgeted targets.
    • Engage the Board to drive revenue.

    Research and Grant Writing

    • Manage the Princeton in Africa grant application process, including prospect research, proposal writing, reporting, and compliance with grant requirements.
    • Create and manage a grant calendar to track all upcoming applications and reports, collaborating with staff as needed.
    • Clearly and effectively draft dynamic, reader-friendly, and high-quality written proposals.

    Event Planning

    • With supervision from the Executive Director, plan, organize, and execute fundraising events to generate financial support and engage with donors and stakeholders.
    • Coordinate event logistics, sponsorships, and participant engagement.
    • Support the mid-year Fellow’s leadership retreat in Africa when eligible (position is eligible for international travel, contingent on partnership prospects and funding availability).

    Marketing and Communications

    • Work with the Program Team to collect, organize, and share compelling, diverse, and empowering stories from Princeton in Africa.
    • Manage production of all communications materials including PiAf’s bimonthly newsletter, annual report and all email campaigns.
    • Lead the creation of all print and online marketing materials.
    • Maintain PiAf website, including relevant updates for applicants, host organizations and alumni, with the assistance of a website consultant.
    • In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, lead PiAf’s social media campaigns, including the creation and measurement of on-message materials for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
    • Assist in event management including promotion, vendor coordination & logistical support for the annual gala, alumni events and recruitment events.
    • Collaborate with the Program Team to ensure alignment and integration of development efforts across the organization.
    • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to promote fundraising initiatives and organizational goals.

    Qualifications and Skills:

    • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, business, marketing).
    • 7-10 years of experience in fundraising and development, including successful grant writing and donor stewardship.
    • Must have a track record of cultivating relationships across multiple geographic regions.
    • Solid experience in all areas of philanthropic revenue generation including individual giving appeals, institutional giving, event management, and corporate partnerships.
    • At least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
    • Strong leadership and team management skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Patience, creativity, and adaptability.
    • Willing and available to work occasional nights and weekends throughout the year.
    • Knowledge of Canva, InDesign, Photoshop and other design software.
    • Knowledge of fundraising software and tools.
    • Knowledge of video-editing software is a plus, but not required.
    • The ability to communicate easily, respectfully, and sensitively with stakeholders of all ages, generations, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities and deadlines.

    • Compensation ranges between $85,000-$90,000 based upon experience with the ability to earn up to a 3% annual bonus.
    • Twenty days of vacation leave per year plus holidays.

    • The position is located in Princeton, NJ with hybrid working arrangement, however, for the right candidate, we may be open to considering candidates based in other locations in the United States.
