    Description

    The Legal Action Center (LAC) seeks an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Litigation Assistant/Paralegal to support the attorneys in our New York City office. This full-time position includes a mix of paralegal, research, and administrative responsibilities.

    LAC has a hybrid work model; this position includes the opportunity to work up to two days remotely.

    Job Responsibilities

    Support litigation and direct services cases, including:

    • Cite check, bluebook, proofread, format, assemble, file, and serve legal documents; check compliance with court and judge rules
    • Docket management: monitor and save filings, calendar, and track deadlines
    • Under attorney supervision, draft non-substantive/form documents and client affidavits or related documents
    • Attend and assist attorneys in trauma-informed client meetings/interviews, hearings, mediations, depositions, or other appearances
    • Assist with fact investigation and research
    • Obtain, manage, and summarize client documents from third parties, including courthouses (e.g., legal or medical records)
    • Assist with incoming and outgoing discovery productions, support deposition preparation, and coordinate deposition logistics

    Special projects, which may include:

    • Assist with record requests under freedom of information laws: draft requests, review, and organize responses
    • Conduct factual, social science, and legal research

    Administrative tasks, such as:

    • Serve as a “superuser” of our case management system
    • Handle data review and cleanup in the case management system
    • Take notes in meetings (with clients, partner organizations, opposing parties, etc.)
    • Handle the legal team’s incoming and outgoing mail
    • Other administrative tasks as needed

    Qualifications

    • Commitment to social justice, racial justice, and equity, and the issues that most impact the people LAC serves
    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • At least one year of prior legal work experience preferred
    • High attention to detail and accuracy with excellent organizational skills
    • Outstanding research, writing, editing, and fact-checking skills, and ability to accurately and succinctly summarize research
    • Strong oral and written communication, time management, interpersonal, and administrative skills
    • High proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Adobe, and the ability to learn new software and technology
    • Strong work ethic and able to take initiative, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines
    • Willing to learn and exhibit flexibility as needs change
    • Comfort working as part of a team or independently
    • In-person requirements: ability to work in the office at least three days per week or more if the need arises, and to visit courthouses as needed

    Compensation and Benefits

    Salary is commensurate with experience. The salary range is $55,500 to $68,500 per year. Excellent benefits, including medical insurance, 403(b) plan with employer contribution, flexible pre-tax benefits, and generous time off.
