Big Apple Greeter
Since 1992, Big Apple Greeter has enhanced New York City’s worldwide image and enriched the
New York experience by connecting visitors with knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers.
Our goals include:
- Promoting a friendly, inviting, manageable image of New York City.
- Bolstering tourism and fostering economic development.
- Creating opportunities for New Yorkers to give back to the city through volunteering.
Position Overview
Big Apple Greeter’s director of volunteers and communications oversees the work of several
hundred volunteers who serve as Greeters to welcome visitors to New York City or who work in
the office to run the day to day tasks of the program. The director has primary responsibility for
the organization’s communication vehicles, including the website and bimonthly newsletter.
This is a full-time position (35 hours per week) reporting to Big Apple Greeter’s executive
director.
Volunteer Management
- Establish requirements and orientation process for both Greeters and office volunteers who
- coordinate the Greeter program
- Oversee volunteers who review Greeter applications, interview potential volunteers, and orient new Greeters
- Interview, orient, and oversee work of office volunteers who review Greet requests andmatch Greeters with visitors
- Design and lead annual meeting of volunteers and other Greeter gatherings
- Create and carry out systems for volunteer recognition
- Evaluate and maintain records of Greeters’ work through visitor and volunteer evaluations,reports, input from office staff, and conversations with volunteers
- Oversee volunteers’ use of ConneX software for program management and suggest software improvements when needed
- Regularly assess Greeter program, recommending changes and improvements when appropriate
Communications
- Represent Big Apple Greeter with media, including arranging Greets for travel journalists
- Work with volunteers to maintain website, updating content as needed
- Work with volunteers to develop content for bimonthly newsletter sent to volunteers, visitors, and supporters of the program
Other
- Make presentations about Big Apple Greeter to other organizations
- Serve as thought partner for Big Apple Greeter’s executive director, providing input on fundraising, Board development, and other matters
- Make presentations to Board of Directors regarding program trends and media coverage
- Act as primary contact for the International Greeter Association, including participating in Zoom meetings of other Greeter program managers from around the world
Requirements, Salary, and Benefits
- Bachelor’s degree and two years’ experience Salary: $40,000–$45,000
- 50% payment of employee’s health insurance
- 10 days’ vacation (potential 4 weeks), 6 days sick leave, 2 personal leave days annually
