    Compensation: $35 per hour, up to 20 hours per week

    Position Overview

    The Makerspace & Print Room Technician supports the daily operations of the Garcia Center’s Makerspace and Print Room. This role provides technical assistance, customer service, and safety supervision for members, mentee instructors/program participants, students, and visitors. The Technician helps users operate 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, printmaking presses, screenprinting equipment, digital design software, and other fabrication tools. Responsibilities also include equipment maintenance, workshop support, membership assistance, and creating Garcia Center products for sale in Mercado 536.

    Key Responsibilities

    Operations & User Support

    • Manage daily operations of the Makerspace and Print Room to ensure a positive and productive experience for all users.
    • Support users with printmaking equipment including etching presses, relief presses, screenprinting equipment (screens, squeegees, exposure units, washout booths), brayers, rollers, and related tools.
    • Provide hands-on assistance with digital fabrication tools including 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and CNC machinery.
    • Guide users through safe operation of printmaking processes, including screen preparation, coating and exposing screens, printing, curing, and cleanup.
    • Instruct users on software such as Tinkercad, Fusion 360, Illustrator, LightBurn, and other digital design programs as needed, including those commonly used for print-ready artwork.
    • Support setup and facilitation of workshops, classes, orientations, and public programs in both digital fabrication and printmaking.
    • Assist with the creation of Garcia Center products using makerspace and printmaking equipment for sale in Mercado 536.
    • Provide membership support, including orientations for new members and tours for potential members who may use the Makerspace or Print Room.

    Equipment & Facility Maintenance

    • Perform routine cleaning, calibration, and readiness checks of makerspace machines and printmaking equipment.
    • Maintain screenprinting materials such as screens, emulsion, squeegees, inks, exposure units, dryers, and reclaiming/cleaning supplies.
    • Monitor supplies and report maintenance or repair needs to the Executive Director.
    • Maintain organized storage systems, clean work tables, ink stations, washout areas, and fabrication zones.

    Safety & Compliance

    • Enforce safety procedures for both the digital fabrication studio and printmaking studio, including protocols for chemical handling, screen reclamation, solvent use, sharp tools, heat equipment, and press operation.
    • Ensure proper use of PPE including gloves, aprons, safety glasses, and hearing protection.
    • Maintain logs for equipment failures, incidents, and safety concerns.

    Digital & Administrative Support

    • Assist in updating manuals, signage, user guides, and printmaking process instructions.
    • Capture photos and provide content for social media or marketing related to studio activities as assigned.
    • Maintain digital and physical records related to membership use, workshop attendance, equipment logs, and production tasks.
    • Prepare reports or summaries regarding studio usage and equipment performance.
    • Perform other tasks as needed to support makerspace and print room operations.

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Knowledge of 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC equipment, digital design software, and basic printmaking and screenprinting processes.
    • Ability to troubleshoot equipment and support beginner-level users in both digital fabrication and print workflows.
    • Strong communication and customer service skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a community-centered creative environment.
    • High attention to safety, detail, and proper equipment use.
    • Willingness to learn new fabrication and printmaking tools, software, and processes.

    Preferred

    • Experience with Adobe Illustrator, LightBurn, Fusion 360, or similar software used for print and fabrication design.
    • Experience with screenprinting workflows, including coating, exposing, printing, reclaiming, and drying/curing.
    • Prior experience in a makerspace, print studio, fabrication lab, or art studio environment.
    • Experience assisting in workshops, classes, or instructional settings.

    Work Schedule & Environment

    • Part-time schedule determined by program and studio needs.
    • Requires onsite presence in the Makerspace and Print Room.
    • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (or heavier with assistance) regularly; some printmaking materials, screens, or equipment components may require two-person assistance.
    • Requires extended standing, bending, moving through studio spaces, and handling tools, ink, materials, and equipment.
