SMAC Organizer

This person will be responsible for helping to oversee our Students Making a Change program, including community college-based organizing, base-building, and campaign work, as well as training, mentoring, and supporting our SMAC leaders.

Students Making a Change (SMAC) is a community organizing and leadership development program for, and led by, community college students committed to improving education equity and racial justice at City College of San Francisco and beyond. SMAC’s organizing and mobilization efforts helped pass AB 1705, a major win with long-lasting, far-reaching effects for Black and Brown students in community colleges, ensuring that incoming students from low-income high schools are not automatically placed in remedial classes. It also prohibits colleges from requiring students to repeat math and English classes they passed in high school, allowing them to take the necessary classes to transfer right away.

SMAC’s focus at CCSF also enables former Youth Making a Change members and fellows to continue their leadership development from high school, and creates opportunities for students to influence their schools’ policies and culture. SMAC’s mission is to build student power for racial and economic justice, focusing on high-quality education, living wages, and community voice.

Start Dates: ASAP

Salary Range: $55,000-$65,000

Primary Responsibilities:

• Recruit and retain system-impacted students into our membership by conducting outreach, one-on-one meetings, and phone banking
• Supervise, train, support, and evaluate SMAC leaders
• Lead SMAC through the stages of a campaign
• Support Coleman’s education and electoral campaigns by participating in external actions and mobilizations
• Facilitate political education and skills training workshops
• Coordinate student and community member participation in external actions and mobilizations
• Participate and represent in alliances and coalitions
• Regularly document activities and maintain a database
• Participate in morning, night, and weekend activities
• Participate in civic engagement activities
• Participate in annual fundraising activities
• Establish and maintain relationships with faculty, staff, administration, and other allies.
• Coordinate and engage with SMAC Alumni and the Advisory Board

Primary Qualifications:

• Knowledge of education policy/school reform issues from a racial justice perspective
• Highly organized, effective time management skills, and the ability to meet deadlines
• Ability to problem-solve and initiate solutions
• Strong verbal communication skills
• Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office and Google Suite
• Experience in facilitating workshops and planning
• Experience with organizing campaigns

Desired Qualifications:

• At least 2 years of experience as an organizer in a membership organization, ideally with direct parent or student and/or organizing experience in low-income communities
• At least 1 year of experience supporting BIPOC young adult leadership -- either as staff or as a highly responsible volunteer
• Experience working to abolish the school-to-prison pipeline
• Strong written communication skills
• Is from or has deep knowledge of San Francisco’s Black, Latinx, Pacific Islander, and Indigenous communities
• Experience in curriculum for trainings and creating strategic plans
• College degree
• Owns/has access to a car with insurance
• Passion for social justice and improving the lives of low-income and working-class families of color
