    Description

    Position Summary

    The Accounting Manager at Homeless Services Network (HSN) of Central Florida is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the accounting department and supervising accounting staff. This role ensures accurate, timely financial processing, maintains strong internal controls, and supports efficient financial operations aligned with organizational policies, grant requirements, and GAAP.

    This position focuses on operational excellence, staff leadership, process improvement, and the reliable execution of core accounting functions.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Accounting Operations & Daily Financial Management
      • Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts receivable/payable, general ledger, payroll, bank reconciliations, and monthly close processes.
      • Ensure timely and accurate transaction processing and financial recordkeeping.
      • Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), grant regulations, and applicable local, state, and federal laws.
      • Review journal entries, reconciliations, and account analyses for accuracy.
      • Support preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports and schedules
    2. Grants and Contracts Management
      • Ensure accurate accounting and reporting for government grants, private funding, and donor-restricted contributions in accordance with funder requirements.
      • Support grant billing, drawdowns, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
      • Parter with Grants Administration to maintain accurate grant budget monitoring.
      • Maintain documentation needed for audits, monitoring visits, and funder reviews.
    3. Internal Controls and Process Improvement
      • Implement and enforce robust internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure the integrity of financial information.
      • Identify operational inefficiencies and recommend process improvements.
      • Maintain the organization’s fiscal policies and procedures and ensure organization-wide adherence.
      • Support system improvements and automation to increase accuracy and efficiency.
    4. Audit and Compliance
      • Assist in preparation of audit schedules and supporting documentation.
      • Support external auditors and respond to audit inquiries.
      • Ensure accurate documentation for regulatory filings and financial compliance.
    5. Team Supervision & Staff Development
      • Supervise and mentor a team of 5+ accounting professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and excellence.
      • Build capacity within the finance team by setting clear goals, offering ongoing training, and providing constructive feedback and development opportunities.
      • Conduct performance reviews, coaching, and professional development planning.
    6. Stakeholder & Departmental Support
      • Provide financial support to internal departments as needed.
      • Assist leadership with financial data requests and reporting.
      • Serve as a point of contact for accounting-related operational questions.

    Qualifications and Requirements

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
    • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a supervisory role, ideally in a nonprofit or grant-funded organization.
    • Advanced proficiency with Excel, and familiarity with Microsoft Office tools
    • Strong team leadership and staff development skills.
    • Ability to analyze complex data, identify trends, and develop solutions to improve systems and processes.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create reports, and interact with other departments, senior management and external stakeholders.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage competing deadlines, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
    • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail when handling financial and grant-related data.
    • Strong understanding of financial reporting and compliance, with experience in fund and grant accounting.
    • Knowledge of mathematical and accounting principles.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Familiarity with financial management software (i.e. Abila, Sage), Salesforce,
    • Familiarity with Homeless Management Information Systems plus.
    • Familiarity with homelessness, poverty, housing, mental health, recovery and human services.

    Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use their hands to handle, operate, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must also be able to sit for extended periods of time. Additionally, the employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

    Work Environment

    This position operates in an office-based environment, and employees will regularly interact with team members, external agencies. The role demands strong organizational skills, attention to detail, effective communication, and adaptability to dynamic situations. Work is generally completed between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., generally Monday through Friday. This is a full time, exempt position. Additional work on weeknights and weekends is occasionally required based on organizational demand.

    Conditions of Employment

    • Provision of satisfactory references and completion of background investigation check
    • Completion of a pre-employment drug screening as well as post-employment drug or alcohol tests upon reasonable suspicion of use
    • Demonstrated computer literacy, which may be assessed through pre-employment testing.
    • Completion of HSN new employee orientation and ALL required paperwork prior to reporting to work
    • Compliance with all HSN Policies and Procedures.
