Benevolence Farm is a small nonprofit organization that seeks to cultivate leadership, promote sustainable livelihoods, and reap structural change with individuals impacted by the criminal legal system in North Carolina, with a focus on rural communities.

Our community provides transitional employment, safe housing, and community healing for women and gender expansive people leaving incarceration. Benevolence Farm bridges reentry, economic opportunity, and systems change to create pathways toward stability, dignity, and self-determination.

This new role of Deputy Director collaborates with the Executive Director on strategic leadership, operational oversight, and staff development. This role blends high-level management with hands-on execution, ensuring day-to-day operations run smoothly while advancing long-term vision and impact.

The Deputy Director’s primary role is supporting and developing staff — and steps in as Acting Executive Director when needed.

    Annual Salary: $60,000

Benevolence Farm also offers a QSEHRA health benefit and minimum two weeks of vacation.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Leadership & Strategy

    • Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director in advancing Benevolence Farm's mission, long-term vision, and organizational priorities.
    • Translate organizational strategy into clear, actionable operational and programmatic plans with timelines, accountability measures, and staff ownership.
    • Support the Executive Director in external leadership, including thought partnership on systems change, community partnerships, and public-facing strategy.

Program Team Leadership & Organizational Culture

    • Provide supervision and support to staff directors and managers across programs and operations, providing clear expectations, feedback, and support. Meet regularly with staff to ensure staff are successful in implementing goals, making progress, and using operational systems.
    • Support staff growth through mentorship, professional development opportunities, and succession planning.
    • Champion policies and practices that support staff well-being, accessibility, and retention.
    • Foster a workplace culture that is rooted in trauma-informed practices, accountability, and shared leadership.
    • Address performance issues and conflicts with care, clarity, and fairness, recognizing the impacts of trauma and systemic inequity.

    Operations Management

    • Provide day-to-day operational leadership to ensure programs, staff, and systems function cohesively and efficiently.
    • Oversee core operational areas such as human resources, finance, compliance, technology, buildings, and data systems—either directly or through supervision of staff or consultants.
    • Ensure compliance with all legal, contractual, and funder requirements, including employment law, financial controls, reporting deadlines, and program standards.
    • Partner with the Executive Director and accounting firm to develop, monitor, and manage organizational budgets; regularly review financial reports and flag variances or risks.
    • Strengthen internal systems, policies, and workflows to support staff effectiveness, reduce burnout, and increase organizational resilience.
    • Lead continuous improvement efforts by establishing performance metrics, evaluating outcomes, and refining systems to better serve participants and staff.

    Program Evaluation and Reporting

    • Develop systems for timely, accurate, and values-aligned program data collection and reporting, highlighting impact while honoring participant dignity and consent.
    • Track program deliverables, ensure reporting deadlines are met, and maintain documentation (amendments, drafts, disputes, and archives), while resisting extractive or punitive approaches to grant and fundraising compliance.
    • Support the Executive Director with grant and fundraising proposal development by translating programmatic work into compelling narratives, budgets, and outcomes.
    • Support the Executive Director with alignment of internal program data collection practices, storytelling, and evaluation efforts with fundraising and communications goals.

    Organizational Continuity & External Representation

    • Act as the primary organizational lead in the Executive Director's absence, ensuring continuity of leadership, operations, and decision-making.
    • Maintain strong internal communication and stability during leadership transitions or periods of change.
    • Represent Benevolence Farm with funders, donors, community partners, and collaborators as needed, serving as a trusted ambassador of the organization's mission, values, and programs.
    • Support crisis management and organizational decision-making during emergent or high-stakes situations.

    QUALIFICATIONS

This role is for someone who:

    • Loves to mentor and support the development of adults who are often in the first professional role of their careers.
    • Believes that formerly incarcerated people are experts in their own lives.
    • Respects lived experience as a form of expertise and actively works to center formerly incarcerated voices in decision-making.
    • Is excited by the idea of building an organization that centers abolitionist practices of accountability and repair.
    • Is comfortable holding both structure and flexibility, recognizing that healing and growth are not linear.
    • Understands that safety, stability, and economic opportunity are inseparable from racial, gender, and economic justice.
    • Understands that workforce development, reentry, and healing are not transactional services, but long-term, relational work rooted in dignity, trust, and shared power.

    Required Skills & Experience:

    • Strong project management and operational skills, ideally in small non-profit organizations (budget less than $1M).
    • Proven managerial experience in small teams of less than 10 staff.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, including public speaking and relationship-building.
    • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution in a fast-paced environment.
