    Description

    Context

Globally, road traffic injuries (RTI) kill over 1.2 million people every year, with children and young people among the most at-risk groups. Sub-Saharan Africa has the world’s most dangerous roads, and rates of RTI are increasing as roads are built and vehicle ownership expands across the continent.

Amend (www.amend.org) is a non-profit organization that develops, implements, evaluates, and scales public health programs to prevent RTI in Africa. Its work includes:

    • Assisting governments to design roads that maximise the safety of vulnerable road users, in particular child pedestrians
    • Development and implementation of localized infrastructure to increase pedestrian safety
    • Road safety education
    • Training for high-risk groups such as commercial motorcycle riders
    • Advocacy to support vulnerable road users
    • Scientific research into the causes and effects of road traffic injury

All of Amend’s program work is continually evaluated for efficacy and impact. The World Health Organization has said that “the interventions promoted by Amend are perfectly in line with those being promoted by the WHO.”

Amend is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States and as a non-profit in France. It has offices in Ghana, Mozambique, and Tanzania, and runs programs in numerous countries across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The FIA Foundation (www.fiafoundation.org) is a UK-based independent philanthropy working globally to promote safe, clean, fair, and green mobility. Through research, advocacy, and grantmaking, the Foundation supports initiatives addressing road safety, climate action, air quality, and sustainable urban transport. Amend and the FIA Foundation have worked together for almost 20 years to develop, test, and scale proven-effective programs to make roads safer for children and communities across Africa. Safe Schools Africa (see link for full description) is a partnership between Amend, the FIA Foundation and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) that makes school journeys safer across Africa. Building on Amend’s proven SARSAI model, it provides technical assistance, training, and advocacy to ensure road projects include lifesaving pedestrian infrastructure. By combining engineering support with local capacity building and policy advocacy, Safe Schools Africa embeds people-centered design in Africa’s transport systems and prevents child road injuries and deaths.

The Safe Schools Africa Program Development Consultant will play a critical role in securing the resources needed to expand the impact of the Safe Schools Africa program.

Safe Schools Africa is a partnership between Amend, the FIA Foundation, and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), working to make school journeys safe for children across Africa. The program provides proven-effective assistance to road projects, embedding life-saving infrastructure such as sidewalks, crossings, and speed-calming measures around schools. It is the only initiative of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa that has been proven, through a published peer-reviewed control study, to reduce both the number and severity of road traffic injuries among children.

Although Amend’s operations are based in Africa and only one staff member (the Executive Director) is American, the organization’s financial headquarters are located in the United States. Amend has 20 years of experience collaborating with U.S.-based funders. Both Amend and the FIA Foundation see significant potential to expand engagement with partners in the U.S.

The successful candidate will be strategic, committed to evidence-based impact, and experienced in building strong, enduring relationships with U.S.-based foundations, corporations, and institutional donors.

As this is a contract position, please note that – unless expressly agreed otherwise in advance – the consultant will be responsible for covering any travel, conference, or other expenses incurred in the course of carrying out the activities.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Strategy Development: Design and execute a comprehensive U.S. focused fundraising strategy aligned with organizational goals.
    • Donor Engagement: Cultivate and steward relationships with individual donors, corporate partners, foundations, and institutional funders.
    • Proposals: Research funding opportunities, and work with Amend and the FIA Foundation to prepare high-quality proposals.
    • Monitoring & Reporting: Track project development performance against an agreed set of key performance indicators, prepare progress reports, and provide insights to leadership at Amend and the FIA Foundation in a concise way.

    Qualifications & Experience

    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in fundraising, business development, or donor relations, ideally within the NGO or development sector
    • Proven track record in securing significant grants, sponsorships, and donor contributions from U.S. based funders
    • Strong proposal writing and presentation skills
    • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities
    • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
    • Familiarity with African development contexts and/or road safety issues is a strong advantage
