Africa Matters Initiative (AMI) is a youth-led nonprofit organisation working across Africa to empower young people through leadership development, social entrepreneurship, and advocacy. Our work spans 23 African countries and supports young leaders driving change in their communities.
AMI is seeking a Part-Time Accountant to support our financial management, reporting, and statutory compliance. This role is well-suited to an accountant with nonprofit experience who values flexibility, autonomy, and meaningful impact.
Responsibilities
Financial Management & Compliance
- Maintain accurate financial records in line with SARS and CIPC requirements.
- Ensure compliance with income tax, employment taxes, and statutory obligations.
- Apply and uphold AMI’s financial policies and procedures.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly management accounts by the 20th of each month, including tailored programme-level reports.
- Analyse financial data and share clear financial updates with senior leadership.
Payroll & Banking
- Manage monthly payroll using Sage Payroll, including staff salaries and volunteer payments.
- Submit monthly EMP201 returns by the 7th of each month.
- Process monthly bank statements and reconciliations using Sage Accounting.
Audit & Statutory Submissions
- Lead preparation for the annual external audit, including coordination with auditors and preparation of audit schedules.
- Support EMP501 reconciliations, provisional tax submissions, and annual income tax returns.
- Assist with submission of annual CIPC returns and other ad-hoc statutory requirements.
Skills & Experience
- Accounting qualification or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong knowledge of South African nonprofit accounting and compliance.
- Experience working with Sage Payroll and Sage Accounting.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to deadlines.
Time Commitment
This role requires 10–15 hours per month, with increased hours during audit and statutory filing periods.
