    Who We Are

ACC is one of the nation’s largest open-admission animal shelters, whose mission is to End Animal Homelessness in NYC. We touch the lives of nearly 20,000 animals each year. ACC is more than an animal shelter; we are a resource to the community, always seeking ways to keep the human-animal bond intact. With a 90% placement rate, our progressive, life-saving initiatives contribute to the successful placement of our animals.

We strive to find loving homes for homeless and abandoned cats, dogs, guinea pigs and rabbits, both by adopting animals directly to the public and by partnering with more than 200 dedicated animal placement organizations (our New Hope partners). We also help keep NYC communities safe and rescue animals in need, responding to emergencies that involve animals as well as keeping our doors open 24/7 for people and animals in need.

    Summary

Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) is one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the country, taking in more than 20,000 animals each year. We are different from other rescue organizations because we do not turn away any homeless, abandoned, injured or sick animal in need, including cats, dogs, rabbits, small mammals, reptiles, birds, farm animals and wildlife. ACC is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit in NYC with this unique responsibility.

ACC is actively seeking a full-time Paralegal & Compliance Analyst to support the General Counsel and perform a variety of legal and administrative tasks that facilitate the legal department.

Ideal candidates include paralegals and compliance officers. Law students encouraged to apply.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • 2-3 years of Paralegal and/or Compliance Analyst experience required.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe including ability to scan, format, edit and redact .DOC and .PDF files.
    • Excellent writing and communication skills.
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Acute attention to detail, superior writing skills.
    • Able to work independently, multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

    Benefits

ACC values work/life balance and offers a generous paid-time-off (PTO) package that includes vacation time, birthdays off, personal days and sick pay. We also value physical and mental health by offering a great open access Cigna medical, dental and vision insurance at a low premium to our employees as well as 401K and Pension, Life Insurance. We also have on-the-job training for 2-4 weeks, periodic all staff trainings to include safety, DEI, cross training, and other growth opportunities.

Because ACC is a nonprofit, employees may be eligible for loan forgiveness, cancellation, and/or consolidation under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program (PSLF). Created under the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, PSLF allows borrowers who work full time for nonprofits and government agencies to have their outstanding debt forgiven tax-free on Federal Direct Loans, after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.

    Essential Job Functions:

    • Case management and support: track litigation, manage case calendar and deadlines, file and retrieve court documents in person and electronically using New York State eCourts and Federal (PACER) efiling systems.
    • Draft and prepare legal documents, including contracts, pleadings, correspondence, compile discovery materials, and other related administrative duties.
    • Monitor and document legal compliance with state and local laws, including comprehensive animal shelter standards under New York State law, and New York City Local Law 97, including, but not limited to, conducting on-site shelter visits, consultations with staff and other professionals, analyzing legal documents, preparing detailed reports and providing analysis to ensure organizational compliance.
    • Manage FOIL request responses (e.g. compile responsive records, redact private and exempt information).

    Other Responsibilities:

    • Conduct legal research relating to relevant laws, regulations, precedents, and other legal questions.
    • Assist with contract review, analysis, drafting, and updating legal agreements.
    • Assist with contract management, i.e. tracking deadlines, deliverables, compliance, and recordkeeping.
    • Assist with registration, renewal, and maintenance of various permits and licenses required for shelter operations and adoption events.
    • Manage responses to civil subpoenas and law enforcement requests for records and information.
    • Coordinate with relevant departments to run custom database reports using specialized software.
    • Attend various hearings, depositions, meetings, trainings, conferences, workshops, and other events as needed. Evening court appearances will occasionally be needed.

    • Paralegal certification preferred.
    • Ability to learn quickly and navigate ACC’s animal records database.
    • Strong and confident communicator in person and on the phone.
    • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and assist with legal issues across all areas of the organization.

    Work Environment

ACC has shelter locations across the 5 boroughs and a corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan. This position is located at ACC’s headquarters but may include working at ACC’s Queens shelter or other locations within New York City. Because ACC houses hundreds of animals across its facilities at any given time, visits to our Care Centers involve exposure to fur, odors, and other airborne particles.
