    Description

    Arts|Learning, a 501(c)(3) arts education advocacy organization, has received foundation funding to hire a Political Consultant to support its Arts Access for All project. The goal is to secure state-mandated arts-education funding for preK-12 Massachusetts public schools. A bill, H4297, the Lowell Mason Arts Education Equity Act, has been filed and is currently under review by the MA legislature. This is a temporary, 10-month consultancy. This position reports to the Project Manager.

    This is a hybrid position. The majority of this work is virtual and can be done from home, but candidates need to be physically located close to Eastern Massachusetts and can meet in person with legislators and state education policy makers.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Strong skills and relevant experience in developing and implementing political campaigns, and engaging legislators on legislative action in Massachusetts.
    • An experienced lobbyist who is registered with the Secretary of the Commonwealth.
    • Physically located in or near Eastern Massachusetts and can meet in person with state legislators and policy makers as necessary.
    • Knowledge of the arts and/or arts education is a plus.
    • Knowledge of education funding, MA education policies, and arts-education issues

    Duties include the following:

    • Confer regularly with the lead bill sponsor in the MA Legislature, and other co-sponsoring legislators, on appropriate actions for the Arts Access for All Coalition
    • Recommend actions for constituents to take to support the Lowell Mason Act
    • Coordinate publicity and actions with the Communications Manager and Project Coordinator
    • Identify and encourage other MA legislators to co-sign and support the bill
      • Arrange meetings with key members of the legislature’s Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development
      • Arrange meetings with key members of the legislature’s Joint Committee on Education
    • Track MA Legislature’s meetings regarding the overhaul of Chapter 70 education funding formula
    • Track the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) involvement in revising the Chapter 70 education funding formula
    • Available for twice-monthly virtual meetings with the Arts Access for All Coalition
    • Utilize the NAfME Voter Toolbox for campaigns to create support of government officials

    Compensation: Consultant compensation for this work is $5,000 over the next 10 months, or $500 monthly. Travel and other related business expenses are compensated additionally.
