    Description

The Calyx Institute is seeking a skilled and motivated Android BSP Engineer to join the CalyxOS team. This role will focus on maintaining and integrating new devices into our custom operating system, CalyxOS, ensuring long-term support for existing devices and troubleshooting device-specific issues; particularly for those that have reached the end of official vendor or manufacturer support. As part of our mission to provide secure, privacy-focused mobile solutions, you'll play a key role in making sure that devices, both new and old, run smoothly, are regularly updated, and remain part of the CalyxOS ecosystem. This role will report to the CalyxOS Technical Project Manager, and regularly coordinate with other Calyx team members and across other program areas.

Calyx values a diverse range of experiences and are open to candidates who may not meet all listed requirements but have the potential to thrive in this role.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Perform regular maintenance and updates on devices already supported by CalyxOS (including Pixels, Fairphone, Motorola, Shift, etc.).
    • Update device tree and kernel sources for all CalyxOS supported devices.
    • Develop and implement device-specific solutions, including handling platform bugs and firmware issues.
    • Implement CalyxOS support for new devices, including managing the bring-up process, troubleshooting hardware functionality, resolving integration issues, and ensuring compatibility.
    • Collaborate closely with upstream projects and contributors.
    • Contribute to team knowledge by documenting new findings, troubleshooting steps, and solutions to common device-specific issues.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Key Skills and Competencies

    • Strong experience in Android device bring-up, Board Support Packages (BSP), and AOSP-based development.
    • Familiarity with the Android build system, device trees, bootloaders, recovery, and kernel customization.
    • Proficiency in Linux systems, embedded development, and command-line tools.
    • Experience working with Git, Gerrit, and other version control systems.
    • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex hardware/software integration issues.
    • Comfortable collaborating with upstream projects and working on long-term support for devices.
    • Experience with reverse engineering or working around limited vendor documentation is a plus.
    • Clear communication skills, and ability to document processes, patches, and troubleshooting steps clearly.
    • Self-directed and able to work in a remote-first, asynchronous, fast-paced, open-source development environment.
    • Relevant experience in embedded systems, Android OS development, or mobile hardware integration strongly preferred.

    Preferred Qualifications and Experience

    • Four-year degree (or equivalent)
    • 1-3 years professional experience in similar roles
    • Familiarity and/or experience with FOSS and/or the Internet freedom and digital rights ecosystem a plus
    • Ability to communicate in spoken and written English
