    About the Organization:

    Patients For Affordable Drugs (P4AD) is the only national patient advocacy organization focused exclusively on lowering prescription drug prices. The bipartisan organization, founded by a patient with incurable blood cancer, amplifies the voices of Americans struggling under crushing drug prices to ensure policymakers and elected officials understand the toll of high drug costs. P4AD does not accept contributions from any organizations that profit from the development or distribution of prescription drugs.

    About the Role:

    P4AD is seeking a Director of Finance and Operations who will serve as a key member of the leadership team, responsible for ensuring the financial health, operational stability, and human resources compliance of P4AD (c3), P4AD Now (c4), and P4AD Action (PAC). This role provides strategic oversight and hands-on management of finance, accounting, HR, and administrative functions to enable the organization to pursue its mission effectively.

    Core Responsibilities:

    Finance & Accounting

    • Oversee and cultivate the relationship and functions of the external accountants. Lead weekly coordinating meetings to ensure tasks stay on track.
    • Supervise and work in close coordination with external accountants for day-to-day accounting transactions and monthly and annual reconciliations.
    • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and multi-year financial planning processes.
    • Manage day-to-day accounting transactions and financial reporting for all entities in close coordination with the external accountants.
    • Review monthly entity allocations in close coordination with external accountants and ensure compliance with annual planning, forecasts, cash flow and IRS regulations and GAAP standards.
    • Oversee and process payroll, 401(k), and benefits contributions; reconcile with external accounting firm.
    • Prepare timely ad hoc, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for the Executive Director and Board.
    • Monitor cash flow, reserves, and runway; provide strategic recommendations to ED.
    • Manage external audits, tax filings, and the preparation of financial reports in support of funder requirements, grant proposals, and awarded grants.
    • Ensure strong internal controls, segregation of duties, and documentation of all processes.

    Human Resources

    • Oversee HR processes including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, and offboarding.
    • Manage payroll and benefits administration through Gusto.
    • Manage 401K retirement plans with Employee Fiduciary.
    • Maintain and update HR policies and procedures; ensure compliance with employment laws.
    • Lead annual compensation reviews, benefits benchmarking, and equity/adjustment processes in coordination with ED.
    • Support staff development, training, and retention strategies.
    • Foster a positive, inclusive, and transparent workplace culture in line with P4AD values.

    Operations & Administration

    • Develop and oversee administrative systems, policies, and workflows.
    • Ensure compliance with grant requirements, reporting deadlines, and entity-specific regulations.
    • Manage vendor relationships, contracts, insurance, and office/facility needs.
    • Oversee finance and human resources data across platforms (QuickBooks, Bill.com, Brex, Gusto, etc.) and ensure integration across systems.
    • Maintain organizational calendars, compliance logs, and policy manuals.
    • Support Board governance with financial dashboards, compliance updates, and meeting preparation.

    Qualifications

    • 8–10 years of relevant experience in nonprofit finance and operations, with senior-level leadership preferred.
    • Familiarity with 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) compliance, nonprofit GAAP, and grant reporting.
    • Proficiency with key finance and human resources systems: QuickBooks Online, Gusto, Bill.com, Brex (or similar).
    • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Ability to work across strategic and tactical levels with a small team.
    • High integrity, discretion, and commitment to mission-driven work.

    Benefits

    Position Logistics:

    • Location: Based in Washington, DC., three days a week in office is required (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).
    • The position is exempt and full-time
    • Hours: Full-time (40 hours per week). Occasional work outside traditional office hours may be required during busy finance or fundraising periods.
    • Compensation & Benefits: Competitive salary range: $115,000 – $150,000 (commensurate with experience) and benefits, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k) matching program, and PTO.
