    Description

    The Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) is accepting applications for a full-time Senior Accountant to join its fiscal team. Currently, MLAC follows a hybrid work schedule and requires employees to work at a commutable distance to the Boston office.

    SUMMARY OF POSITION

    The Senior Accountant, reporting to the Fiscal Director, serves as a key member of the fiscal team. This role bridges leadership and staff-level accounting functions, supporting the Fiscal Director in oversight of MLAC’s financial operations while providing direct guidance, support and supervision to the Staff Accountant. The Senior Accountant ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, assists with compliance, and plays an active role in maintaining and improving MLAC’s fiscal systems and processes.

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Support the Fiscal Director in preparing accurate and timely financial reports for the CFO, Board Finance Committee, and Board.
    • Assist with audit preparation and provide internal support to external auditors to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
    • Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, payroll, reconciliations, and grant-related financial activities.
    • Provide guidance, oversight, and training to the Staff Accountant in carrying out day-to-day fiscal responsibilities.
    • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and grant-related reporting as assigned by the Fiscal Director.
    • Assist in maintaining and enhancing MLAC’s financial systems, including QuickBooks, Bill.com, Fluxx (grant software) and ADP payroll systems.
    • Support budget preparation and program monitoring, including departmental and program-level adjustments.
    • Contribute to the development and improvement of accounting policies, procedures, and workflow efficiency.
    • Serve as a resource to grantees, program staff, and fiscal staff on financial processes and reporting requirements.
    • Participate in fiscal team meetings and organization-wide initiatives, supporting a collaborative and inclusive workplace.

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

    • Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field (CPA or progress toward CPA preferred but not required). Relevant work experience may be substituted for degrees.
    • Three or more years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
    • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Microsoft Office Suite, and ADP payroll systems.
    • Strong organizational skills with high attention to accuracy and detail.
    • Demonstrated ability to review, guide, and support staff in accounting functions.
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and reconciliation skills.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain financial information to staff with a non-financial background.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a hybrid team environment.

    • Demonstrated interest in serving the non-profit and social justice sectors
