    Position Overview:

    The ESOL Instructor will provide contextualized English language instruction to adult learners focused on developing communication, cultural competency, and professional language skills that improve employability and workplace success. This is a new position that represents an expansion of The Welcoming Center’s work to Chester County, and the Instructor will work in partnership with both TWC and the Kennett Square Library.

    This Instructor will teach two courses, English for Workplace Communication (EWC) and English for Job Search (EJS), at the Kennett Square Library during the Winter and Spring 2026 terms. The courses integrate English language instruction with digital literacy, career readiness, and practical communication skills needed in U.S. workplaces. Working collaboratively with the ESOL Program Manager and Director of ESOL & Digital Skills, the Instructor will refine lesson plans, support participant engagement, and ensure classes align with The Welcoming Center’s broader workforce development and integration goals. Instructor will ensure clear communication with the Kennett Library adult education staff regarding participant engagement, resource needs, and goals.

    Position Requirements:

    • Teach the English for Workplace Communication and English for Job Search classes in-person using established curriculum and materials.
    • Adapt lessons to meet the diverse linguistic, educational, and cultural needs of adult learners.
    • Incorporate digital literacy and workplace communication skills into all instruction.
    • Facilitate practical learning experiences, such as mock interviews, role plays, and workplace simulations – with the support of volunteers, as needed.
    • Use both standardized and authentic assessment methods to measure participant progress. Collect and track participant work products such as resume and cover letter.
    • Develop supportive relationships with learners, providing regular, individualized feedback.
    • Collaborate with both TWC and Kennett Library staff to align ESOL instruction with participant goals and intended program outcomes.
    • Support program outreach, recruitment, and administrative tasks, including maintaining accurate attendance, administering pre- and post-class evaluations.
    • Maintain high attention to detail, privacy, and data integrity.
    • Collaborate with KSL staff to engage volunteers in classroom instruction or individualized learner support, ensuring alignment with program goals.
    • As requested, actively participate in staff meetings, professional development sessions, and community engagement opportunities that support the mission of the ESOL and Digital Skills team.
    • Provide input to Director of ESOL and other TWC staff to inform reporting, program development, and program planning.
    • Uphold TWC’s core values by promoting an inclusive, asset-based, and participant-centered approach to instruction and engagement.

    Required Education & Attributes:

    • Bachelor’s degree and TESOL, TEFL, or related English language teaching certification (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
    • 2–3 years of experience teaching English to adults in community-based or workforce education settings.
    • Demonstrated experience with participant-centered and culturally responsive instructional methods.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to adapt to diverse learning needs.
    • Strong computer and digital literacy skills, including experience with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and online teaching platforms.
    • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and immigrant integration.

    Preferred Education & Attributes:

    • Master’s degree in TESOL, Education, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.
    • Lived experience within immigrant, refugee, or multicultural communities.
    • Familiarity with Chester County and environs, including local social service and immigrant-serving agencies
    • Experience teaching English integrated with career readiness or job search skills.
    • Experience teaching digital literacy - including using internet, email, word processing, and online job searching – especially to English Language Learners.
    • Experience in workforce development, such as teaching job search skills such as job interviews and resume and cover letter development, a plus.
    • Experience using Salesforce or similar participant-tracking platforms.
    • Bilingual proficiency and curriculum design experience a plus.

    The instructor will be expected to spend all instructional teaching on-site at Kennett Square Library. Instructor will be able to work remotely for all prep and non-instructional hours, excluding any required in-person meetings with Library or TWC staff.

    Work environment:

    • Operates in a professional office environment or remotely. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
    • Dynamic, fast-paced, and sometimes ambiguous environment.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Must be able to lift 5-10 pounds at times.
    • Standing for extended periods.
    • Walking, sometimes over uneven surfaces or long distances.
    • Climbing stairs or ladders.
    • Bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching.
    • Reaching overhead or at shoulder level.
    • Pushing or pulling objects (carts, equipment, etc.)
    • Driving to satellite offices, as needed.

    Class Schedule:

    The role includes teaching two sequential ESOL courses at the Kennett Square Library (320 E State St., Kennett Square, PA 19348). Both courses meet in person on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 – 8:30 pm:

    • English for Workplace Communication (EWC): 60 instructional hours
    • Delivered over 12 weeks (two 2.5-hour classes per week)
    • English for Job Search (EJS): 70 instructional hours
    • Delivered over 14 weeks (two 2.5-hour classes per week)

    Compensation & Benefits:

    Compensation: $35 per hour for instructional and approved preparation and administrative time, 10-15 hours per week.
