    This position performs a variety of activities in the field of public relations that directly assist the External Communications Manager in social media and digital communications execution of The Salvation Army’s National Community Relations and Development Section.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Supports the External Communications Manager and Director of Communications as primary community manager and content creator for the various social and digital communications channels of The Salvation Army National Headquarters, Publications, and World Service Office. Works with external and internal communications teams to coordinate digital communication efforts across platforms with the field, with corporate partners, media partners, and more. Works directly with the national agency of record, alongside the External Communications Manager and other NCRD team members, to develop digital assets for national channels and to coordinate field engagement online with national resources.

    Drafts all social media content, in coordination with the external communications manager and the agency of record, for The Salvation Army’s National social media channels. This will include developing, engaging with, and/or monitoring social media content and channels in evenings or on weekends as circumstantially required.

    Drafts all social media content for ad hoc accounts developed for temporary purposes, such as national conferences.

    Captures, edits, and publishes live social media content for all National Salvation Army social media channels. This will include travel as needed for events, partner activations, executive messaging opportunities, etc.

    Assists in writing, editing, proofing, and publishing, feature-style digital content for The Salvation Army’s national newsroom and other owned online channels.

    Provides strategic guidance and new engagement strategies for all national social media and digital communications channels, including social media, the national website, and other public-facing owned outlets.

    Develops and consolidates digital asset packages, social media guidance, and online integration strategies for field use.

    Develops and implements integrated online communication strategies, in coordination with the internal and external communications managers, for promoting national corporate partner activations.

    Researches and provides recommendations for new platforms or communication strategies to be considered by National Headquarters.

    Provides regular, relevant analytics reports to Department, Section, and National Leadership, to identify strengths and opportunities, and to measure the successes and challenges of a national campaign or strategy.

    Works with the agency to monitor and measure the Army’s earned and paid media presence and plans strategies accordingly.

    Supervises interns as needed in fulfilling the external communications support roles of the department, including earned media opportunities, social media, corporate partner communications, and more.

    Learns and understands the roles and responsibilities of all other members of the NCRD Communications Department, and develops the skillsets needed to fill primary and secondary roles as a cross-functional team.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Marketing or related field,

    and

    three to five years’ experience in related field at an organization;

    or

    any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

    May require a valid driver’s license and/or passport.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of public communications, including traditional and social media.

    Ability to write original copy, content, and promotional materials.

    Ability to communicate professionally and intellectually with a variety of Salvation Army publics.

    Ability to edit and proofread news releases and publications, and repackage for social media consumption

    Ability to integrate and interpret data from various sources through research.

    Ability to maintain the confidentiality of The Salvation Army’s policies, procedures and information shared as befitting the needs of the position and exposure to a diversity of situations and audiences.

    MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

    Ability to meet attendance and availability during emergency responses and the extended period from Thanksgiving through Christmas.

    Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language; Spanish a plus.

    Demonstrated written/verbal communication skills.

    Good working knowledge of various content management systems, especially those used at NHQ such as Hootsuite, TweetDeck, Facebook Business Manager, etc.

    Ability to travel, possibly internationally, and to make appropriate arrangements for traveling alone and/or with others.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.

    Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

    This position holds the potential of exposing the individual to additional elements of the outdoors (heat, wind, rain, cold, snow) by participating in outdoor Washington, DC-based news conferences and in going to emergency response sites. Visiting emergency response sites may require moving into environments that do not have immediate access to food, water, electricity or lodging for extended periods of time.
