    Description

If you jolt out of bed in the morning ready to bring the fight to the very Big Tech CEOs who are addicting kids (and us) to social media so that they can profit and sell our data to the highest bidder – all to finance their massive, energy-sucking data centers that power the AI technology Big Tech is forcing us to use (without consent) that is turning the internet into worthless, deadly slop, then keep reading!

The Tech Oversight Project is seeking a highly motivated Communications Associate to join our campaign-style team. This is an ideal opportunity for a hungry and personable candidate to gain valuable campaign communications skills in a fast-paced, rapid-response environment – without having to leave Washington, DC.

Applicants should have exceptional interpersonal skills, the ability to work quickly and independently, and experience drafting copy for a variety of communications needs. Graphic design and video editing are a plus, but we are willing to train the right candidate. Primary responsibilities will include:

    • Draft a range of communications products, including social media posts, press releases, talking points, pitches, and fact sheets for a wide audience.
    • Manage the organization’s website and posting schedule on social media.
    • Track rapid response events in real-time, proactively suggesting content ideas and executing those ideas with senior staff.
    • Conduct outreach to reporters and partners regarding coalition and earned media opportunities.
    • Monitor daily media coverage reports for interesting and engaging developments in Congress and the tech industry.
    • Design graphics and edit videos for our social media channels and partner organizations (but graphic design experience is not mandatory).

    Qualifications:

    • A strong desire to ruin Big Tech’s day.
    • At least 2 years of communications or digital experience. Capitol Hill, campaign, or non-profit experience is valued, but not a prerequisite.
    • Strong writing skills and ability to synthesize complex policy ideas into engaging copy that can be understood by a large audience.
    • Strong organizational skills that reflect an ability to balance multiple tasks, meet competing deadlines, adapt to changing priorities, and ask for help when complications arise.
    • A good-natured demeanour, an ability to develop relationships with your colleagues and coalition partners, a commitment to tech accountability and consumer protection, a willingness to gain new skills and learn more about complex legislative issues facing our nation.
    • An interest in politics, knowledge of how our political system works in Washington, D.C. and statehouses, and a hunger for consuming and creating news.

    Compensation and Benefits:

The Communications Associate is a full-time exempt position with an annual salary between $50,000 – $65,000. Though The Tech Oversight Project is fully remote, preference will be given for Washington, D.C.-based candidates. Relocation reimbursement is not available for this role.

    Benefits

    • Remote working - work from your home or a coffee shop
    • 401(k) retirement program
    • Employer-subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance purchased through the DC health exchange
    • Unlimited paid holidays, including office-wide closures in August and over the holiday period surrounding Christmas and New Year
    • Cell phone stipend
