Role description
The 19th will be hiring two editors in this job application process, each with different areas of coverage:
- child care, the economy, health and sports
- climate, disability and aging, education, immigration, justice and national issues
The editor will work closely with editorial directors to assign, shape, edit and publish stories to fulfill The 19th’s mission of serving women and LGBTQ+ people with timely, high-quality and distinctive journalism across formats and platforms. This role is responsible for supporting editorial directors in implementing an audience-centered coverage strategy within a team of reporters and fellows by developing, editing and producing a range of stories, from quicker turns to longer-term coverage and special projects; from written articles to video scripts and newsletters. The editor will also be available to provide second edits on stories and edit copy from other departments.
As an example of a typical week, the editor may work with reporters and fellows to develop stories in coordination with their manager, conduct first and second edits on various story types, and collaborate with reporters and audience, visuals and planning teams to produce stories. They’ll work with their manager to make weekly and monthly plans for their team and help fill coverage gaps. The editor may fill in for editorial directors as needed, taking on tasks such as joining planning meetings and facilitating team meetings. This role will primarily work in tools like Google Workspace, Airtable, WordPress and Parsely.
