    Description

    About Us

Lutheran Settlement House is part of a movement rooted in radical compassion and focused on making lasting, meaningful change in people’s lives and in our community. The voices of our clients guide our work, telling us what supports they need and what needs to change in our city. Our staff shares deeply held values that make us a welcoming, responsive, and a reliable safe haven for some of Philadelphia’s most vulnerable populations. We accompany our clients in times of crisis, we are catalysts for building community, and we joyfully celebrate the strength of those we serve.

    Scope of the Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Development and Communications, the Volunteer Manager plays a key role in the daily operation, continued growth, and long-term vision of our volunteer program. This position is responsible for recruiting, vetting, onboarding, and supporting the volunteers who help advance the mission of Lutheran Settlement House (LSH).

The Volunteer Manager partners closely with staff across all programs to understand their volunteer needs and to thoughtfully match volunteers in ways that strengthen our work and community. To build and nurture a broad volunteer base, this role engages in outreach to neighbors, community organizations, civic and faith groups, universities, and corporate partners.

As the public face of the volunteer program, the ideal candidate will feel comfortable speaking to groups of all sizes and be open to representing LSH on our website and social media platforms. The Volunteer Manager also oversees all in-kind donations to the organization requiring regular communication with program staff to understand our clients evolving needs, as well as clear communication with donors.

This position calls for excellent attention to detail, adaptability in a fast-paced environment, and a deep commitment to advancing LSH’s mission and values.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with staff across programs to identify meaningful volunteer opportunities.
    • Recruit, vet, and onboard volunteers while equipping staff with best practices for working with volunteers.
    • Partner with the Development Team on outreach strategies, promotional materials, and presentations to attract new volunteers.
    • Maintain an accurate and well-organized volunteer database (Volunteer Local), including posting opportunities and generating timely reports.
    • Identify and address challenges experienced by volunteers or staff to ensure a positive, supportive experience.
    • Oversee the process for tracking and managing in-kind donations across the organization.
    • Plan and implement thoughtful, creative volunteer stewardship and appreciation efforts.
    • Support efforts to engage volunteers as donors and donors as volunteers.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Experience managing volunteers—and personal volunteer experience—is preferred.
    • Familiarity with Volunteer Local and Canva is helpful; a willingness and ability to learn new technologies is essential.
    • Experience working with or alongside a fundraising team is a plus.
    • Exceptional attention to detail.
    • Excellent organizational skills.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort with public speaking.
    • Ability to build trust and maintain positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
    • Ability to work at both LSH locations regularly.
    • Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
    • Ability to lift 20 pounds occasionally and able to walk and stand for sustained periods of time.

LSH is committed to creating an inclusive experience for all and we firmly believe that we serve our communities best when everyone feels free to be their most authentic self.

We value diversity and are committed to promoting it! We are an equal opportunity employer and applicants from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

    Benefits

    Benefits include:

    • Our benefits include low-cost medical, free dental and vision insurance, as well as agency-funded life and disability insurance.
    • We offer 8-week paid parental leave for staff (eligible after one year of service) who give birth, adopt, or foster a new child in their home.
    • Our paid time off package includes an annual 3-4 weeks of vacation, 12 days of paid sick time, and 5 personal days to use at your discretion.
    • We observe 16 organization-wide holidays, and an early close on Fridays during the Summer.
    • Our 401k retirement savings program offers a 1% match, and we offer pre-tax flexible spending accounts for health, travel, and dependent care.
    • We value growth and learning and offer training and conference participation whenever possible. We value the voices of our staff, and we offer mini grants for staff to pilot new ideas in their work.
    • We offer flexibility for classes, internship possibilities within our organization, and the availability for social work licensure supervision.
    • We understand that employees are people first and foremost and are committed to an overall supportive and flexible organizational culture.
    • Our work is critical, but we know it’s not easy, so we aim to infuse joy wherever possible. Whether we are offering free yoga and exercise classes, ending all-staff meetings with Karaoke or Bingo, or committing steadfast to a snack-based meeting culture – we aim to balance the weight of our work with laughter and levity as often as we can.
