    Position: Social Media Specialist

    Reports to: Chief Development Officer, with a dotted-line relationship to the Chief Operating Officer.

    Salary: $20-$24 per hour, 20 hours per week

    Classification: Part-time

We bring the joy and freedom of cycling to people of all ages through free, high-impact education programs, workforce development initiatives, dynamic public events, and deep partnerships with community groups and government agencies.

    We’re best known as the producer of America’s largest bike ride—the iconic TD Five Boro Bike Tour—which sends 32,000 cyclists on an unforgettable journey through all five boroughs on 40 miles of car-free streets. In addition to this flagship event, we host regional rides and intimate community rides that celebrate the diverse neighborhoods of New York City.

    Proceeds from these events, along with charitable giving, directly power our mission—expanding access to cycling, uplifting communities, and creating a healthier, more connected city.

    Job Description: As the Social Media Specialist, you are a valued member of the communications department, responsible for maintaining our social media properties and developing campaigns to drive event registration, help position Bike New York as a charity of choice, promote good community engagement, enhance the visibility of our brand, promote Bike New York's service delivery and impact.

    This role requires a deep understanding of various social media platforms, their algorithms, and trends. The ideal candidate will excel in content creation for platforms like Instagram and TikTok and is a super user of analytics, design, and video editing tools.

    In consultation with senior leadership, you will design and deploy campaigns, prepare and post organic and paid social content, monitor social properties for comments, and help to maintain the content calendar.

    This is primarily a remote position. However, candidates must live within the New York City Metro Area, and some travel to program locations and weekend work will be required for actual event weekends. Duties will include, but will not be limited to:

    • Develop and curate engaging and creative content reflecting the Bike New York brand voice across various social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, and X).
    • Engage with our audience, identifying positive moments for strategic PR opportunities and addressing any negative posts that present a potential risk to the brand’s image.
    • Write compelling social media copy for posts aimed at boosting engagement, promoting initiatives, and fostering communication with our social media followers.
    • Manage high volume of daily social media posts.
    • Monitor and evaluate feedback and online reviews, providing insightful reports on trends and sentiment.
    • Set and implement social media and communication campaigns to align with marketing strategies.
    • Create, edit, and share novel and compelling content on social media daily (e.g., original copy, photos, videos) to build brand awareness for over 100,000 followers and engage new audiences
    • Collaborate with other teams, such as Events, Education, Financial Development, Recycle-A-Bicycle, and others, to ensure that news and happenings at Bike New York are communicated to the public
    • Communicate with followers and respond to any questions in a timely manner and oversee Bike New York’s online community to ensure appropriate and respectful engagement
    • Stay up to date with current technologies and trends in digital marketing and design and incorporate them into Bike New York’s communications and marketing strategies
    • Work with Development to continue Mission Monday and philanthropic messaging to connect Bike New York as a charity of choice and the need for contributed support for programs and services.
    • Maintain Bike New York’s brand guidelines in all communications and designs and work with other departments and external partners to ensure they are adhering to Bike New York’s branding
    • Execute select digital and print graphic design projects as needed, including but not limited to event signage, maps, and graphics
    • Work closely with the COO and CDO to develop digital strategies and campaigns for Bike New York
    • Monitor website and digital campaign performance and make recommendations for improvement

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor's Degree
    • 2-3 years’ experience in a social media role.
    • Exceptional writing skills that inspire action.
    • Design skills to create giphys, memes and videos.
    • Proficient in Canva, Adobe or social media, graphic design, video production tools.
    • Experience with social media analytics tools like Sprout Social.
    • Passionate about cycling and NYC.
    • Organized, proactive, and adaptable with strong time management.
    • Comfortable thriving in a fast-paced environment, adept at juggling multiple projects and meeting deadlines with enthusiasm.
    • Strong focus on exceptional customer service within a team-oriented culture and effectively communicating vision and culture to various stakeholders.
    • Must have a laptop. We will supply the tools (ie. Meltwater, Social).
    • Ability to prioritize projects with multiple competing deadlines

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Participation in or familiarity with the New York City cycling community
    • Proficiency in a second language
    • Videography and photography skills and comfort with video editing
