The world’s largest fossil fuel producers are already on track to produce more than twice the amount of coal, oil and gas than can ever be burned if we are to hit our climate targets. The Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative is a campaign and diplomatic Initiative that champions a new international mechanism to complement the Paris Agreement, one that would address the structural barriers to the transition and provide a clear plan for the phase out of fossil fuels with equity at the core.

Reporting to the Strategic Advisor and Head of Asia Campaigns & Advocacy, the Asia Campaigner will play a key role in scaling the campaign for a Fossil Fuel Treaty across the region. If you are looking for an exciting opportunity to help grow a bold and ambitious global campaign—one that involves high-level diplomatic engagement, project management, strategic communications, and network organising—while working with a diverse international team committed to a fossil fuel-free future, this role is for you.

The Asia Campaigner will join the International Support Team of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and work closely with the Campaigns and Communications teams. The role will focus on supporting and coordinating efforts to ensure that a growing number of Asian nation-states formally champion the proposed Fossil Fuel Treaty and call for a global, just transition.

As part of a rapidly expanding team, the Asia Campaigner will support diplomatic engagement across the region, strengthen networks of organisations and movements, and help build sustained momentum for the Treaty. This will involve close collaboration with governments, as well as coordination with a wide and growing network of civil society organisations, youth movements, faith-based institutions, subnational governments and cities, high-profile individuals, and other allies across Asia.

    Key Responsibilities

    • In collaboration with the Strategic Advisor and Head of Asia Campaigns & Advocacy and the broader team, support the scaling of the campaign for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty across Asia.
    • Support advocacy with policymakers and nation-states across Asia, including diplomatic engagement with governments and the preparation of briefing materials, talking points, and policy briefs.
    • Coordinate project and event logistics around key regional moments in Asia, and provide support to Asian partners attending major regional and global events.
    • Foster and deepen engagement with Asian movements and civil society organisations across a broad range of constituencies—including Indigenous communities, youth movements, artists, faith institutions, and the health sector—by expanding and activating a diverse network of groups and voices calling for global support for a Fossil Fuel Treaty.
    • Secure high-profile city and subnational endorsements across Asia to build further momentum behind the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal.
    • Expand and activate a network of Asian Champions and high-profile individuals backing the Treaty to amplify communications and campaign engagement.
    • Support public communications efforts in Asia that demonstrate growing support for the Fossil Fuel Treaty, in close collaboration with the Communications Team, particularly on social media, content production, and traditional media strategy.
    • Support grant applications and fundraising efforts to increase capacity for the Treaty Initiative in Asia, including strengthening partner organisations and campaign activities.

    Preferred Experience & Attributes

    • 5+ years of professional campaigning experience in Asia.
    • Demonstrated experience in diplomacy and government relations
