Employment Status: Full-time, exempt, not eligible for overtime

Reports To: Policy Director (Program)

Location: Remote (within U.S.)

Just Futures Law is a movement law organization that defends and builds the power of immigrant rights and criminal justice activists, organizers, and community groups. Our mission is to address the criminalization, detention, and deportation of immigrants and people of color in the United States.

Founded in 2019, our work is grounded in a movement lawyering and racial justice framework. We are a growing, remote-based team with a fast-paced, collaborative, and values driven culture. Our staff are located across CA, DC, GA, MA, NC, and OR. Occasional travel is required.

Position Summary

This is a full-time position for a policy attorney or senior policy advisor. The individual will focus on addressing technology and surveillance tools impacting communities through research, public education, and community-driven policy advocacy.

Core Responsibilities

• • Research & writing: Monitor emerging tech and surveillance tools deployed by law enforcement
  • File, review, and analyze public records around technology and surveillance
  • Perform corporate and policy research for community and national partners around technology, surveillance, and data protection
  • Public or community education: Provide digital security trainings for community and national partners
  • Develop public education materials (e.g., fact sheets, slide deck, newsletter) that breakdown complex tech and surveillance tools
  • Develop public education materials for community-driven policy campaigns.
  • Technical assistance: Analyze existing and create new model data policies in support of community partners with occasional fast-moving technical assistance requests
  • Technical support to community partners around digital security with occasional rapid response requests
  • Advocacy & partnerships: Build relationships and support the leadership of community-driven partners on tech and surveillance campaigns
  • Maintain JFL presence in coalition or convening spaces engaged in tech surveillance work
  • Educate federal and local elected officials and press on tech surveillance, such as through issue briefings

Other Responsibilities

• Participate in internal organization building and decision-making as JFL makes decisions in a collaborative fashion that involves significant staff input
• Collaborate with staff to develop and move short and long-term program goals
• Supervise interns as needed
• Any other job-related duties requested by a person authorized to give instructions or assignments

Required Qualifications

• 8 or more years of cumulative experience in the areas of privacy rights, digital security, immigration, policing, or/and surveillance technology
• Excellent project management skills
• Excellent writing and communication skills including the ability to break down complex technologies or policy ideas and communicate their relevance to the public
• Experience with public records requests, corporate research, and policy research
• Strong experience building relationships with community-based partners
• Strong facilitation, feedback, and emotional intelligence skills

Location

• Remote within the U.S.
• Travel: must be available to travel for convenings, critical partner meetings, and staff retreats. We estimate travel is approximately 10-20 days per year.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $90,000-105,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

(Tier 3 Position)

Just Futures Law sets salaries according to its Compensation Equity Guidelines. As a policy, the highest-paid staff cannot earn more than 2.5X the lowest-paid staff.
