    ROLE: COMMUNITY ORGANIZER

    LOCATION: AUSTIN, TX

    The Community Organizer helps Workers Defense activate its base of members to advance and win campaigns that improve the lives of workers and immigrants in Texas. The organizer is the first line of contact for the community and works to build relationships with the organization’s members, build their leadership and build power together.

    THE ROLE IN ACTION:

    • Grow the membership base
      • Conduct canvassing in strategic work sites, neighborhoods, and community institutions to recruit new members to Workers Defense
      • Engage community in a variety of events that showcase the organization’s campaign work and mission
      • Meet monthly base building goals
    • Develop member leaders in your city by fostering the analysis, knowledge, and skills necessary to participate effectively in campaign and organizing work
      • Conduct leadership workshops
      • Participate in the leadership class trainings
      • Other training for members and support as needed
    • Community education and engagement
      • Conduct workshops about our campaigns and education of our work as needed by membership
      • Support with Know Your Rights Presentations
    • Support with or lead member committees or workgroups
    • Support members to plan and take direct action to develop and advance Workers Defense’s strategic campaigns
    • Conduct 1:1s, house visits, etc., with potential and current members to build relationships and engage them in campaign work
    • Build relationships with strategic allies that can help advance our work and campaigns
    • Represent the organization publicly to partner institutions, funders and the public
    • Complete administrative functions including evaluations, plans, timesheets, etc.
    • Support cross-programmatic campaigns, actions, events and meetings
    • Support with grassroots fundraising efforts
    • Any other activities that are necessary to carry out the work of Workers Defense

    WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

    • Ability to work irregular hours (evenings and weekends)
    • Basic computer literacy (PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Slack & Internet use)
    • Fluent in English and Spanish
    • Excellent written and oral communication
    • Ability to work independently and juggle multiple responsibilities
    • Ability and flexibility for some travel, primarily instate
    • Ability to do in person work; going door to door canvassing, going to worksites, leading events or meetings at the office or other locations, conducting presentations or trainings at the office or other locations
    • Ability to drive and operate a vehicle. Will need to transport themselves to meetings, field activities etc.
    • Ability to hold one to one conversations with strangers
    • Ability to speak publicly in small or big settings

    WHAT WE OFFER:

    • Workers Defense has a salary scale that is based on experience. The starting salary for the position is $60,000.00.
    • Every other Friday off.
    • Employer-paid medical, vision, dental, and life insurance.
    • Paid leave consists of 9 days vacation, 10 days sick, and 5 days personal.
    • Paid holidays in addition to office closures the week of fourth of July, the week of Thanksgiving and December 23rd through 31st.
    • A $1,000 annual language stipend for English-Spanish bilingual staff.
    • Retirement plan with company match of 3% (as per our Personnel Policies Manual and after probationary period - 90 days from hire).
    • Parental leave of 12 weeks paid (after probationary period - 90 days from hire).
