Informal Tech Help Instructor for Low-Income Veterans' Apt Community (1 hr/wk)

Our Los Angeles-based Resident Services Department is seeking an instructor who can provide a tech literacy class / help session on Fridays, 10-11am to residents of the Veterans Village of Carson at 21711 South Figueroa St, Carson, CA 90745. All of our residents are low-income, and many are veterans. Tech Help will take place in the Community Room of the building. Property-specific info and images are available here.

Your classes / help sessions are expected to be relatively informal, with residents being equally desirous of conversations in addition to tech help. Classes will be\ private to semi-private in attendance, serving an estimated 1 to 5 resident participants across the hour. Tech Help classes usually overlap with a management-provided light breakfast in the Community Room to help bolster attendance and awareness.

Veterans Village of Carson residents have expressed interest in improving their basic understanding of smartphones, tablets, laptops and computers, and are likely to come with specific questions and their own device, though they may also welcome a presentation approach where you provide information about certain areas of technology literacy. The property's Community Room has two desktop PCs available for your use.

We do not require formal teaching experience or technology degrees/certification, but rather hope to find an instructor with a sense of humor who loves to help people where they are at in life, and who is curious and self-motivated enough to tackle a question or task outside of her/his comfort zone. The ability to communicate well , cultivate relationships, and problem-solve are far more important to the success of our instructors than any subject-specific knowledge.

In addition to aiding residents with their device questions, we will ask the following tasks of you:

1. At the end of each class: complete a digital sign-in sheet on HCA Live to track resident attendance (~ 3 minutes)
2. On/by the 9th of every month: add the next month's class schedule to our class website so that managers know the schedule to advertise your classes in their monthly newsletter. (~3 minutes)
3. On the 25th of every month: fill in a template Canva flyer with the upcoming month's class dates and email a PDF of it to the manager for posting. If you are unfamiliar with Canva—don't fret!—we will show you how to use it. (~5 minutes)

Other important notes for prospective candidates:

1. We do require a background check for all on-site teaching staff.
2. The company that owns and manages this building requires all on-site teaching staff to have the original Covid J&J vaccine OR the first 2 shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. No further shots/boosters required.
3. We do not hold classes on HCA holidays, which impact a few Fridays across the year.
