    Background: Virginians for Reproductive Freedom (VRF) is a broad coalition of advocacy organizations, community leaders, and concerned citizens working together to protect access to reproductive healthcare in the Commonwealth. VRF seeks an Communications Director to lead statewide earned media programs in support of a Constitutional Amendment to protect reproductive freedom in Virginia.

    This race will be one of the most important and exciting ballot measures in the country in the 2025-2026 cycle, with the potential to make an enormous and lasting impact. A win on this ballot initiative means protecting a broad range of reproductive freedoms from future government interference and securing rights for Virginians for generations to come.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Strategic Planning:
      • Develop a comprehensive earned media plan, including clear goals, timelines, and metrics for success both for the qualification and voter communication phases.
      • Collaborate closely with the campaign leadership to establish effective strategies for earned media.
    • Earned Media Generation:
      • Manage media requests and produce high-quality press materials such as press releases, op-eds, public statements, speeches, talking points, presentations, media advisories, briefings, pitch ideas, and more.
      • Oversee the creation of digital and physical campaign materials, including branding, content, design, and distribution.
      • Organize press events, editorial board meetings, and other earned media opportunities.
      • Develop and pitch stories to state and national media.
      • Build and maintain deep relationships with Virginia and the national press.
    • Coalition Management:
      • Manage and facilitate the Communications Committee.
      • Facilitate regular communication to keep coalition members informed, engaged, and working toward shared goals.
      • Conduct message trainings, both internal and external, to deliver our message to the broader volunteer and coalition infrastructure in Virginia.
    • Spokesperson Management:
      • Recruit, train, and manage a bureau of spokespeople, working with the Communications, Legislative Outreach, and Organizing Committees to maintain the integrity of existing relationships.
      • Provide clear guidance, ongoing support, and motivation to ensure spokesperson success and retention.
    • Data Analysis and Reporting:
      • Collect, analyze, and evaluate data related to earned media efforts.
      • Prepare reports detailing the impact of communication activities, including progress achieved, challenges faced, and recommendations for improvement.
      • Utilize data to inform future decision-making and optimize media strategies.

    Qualifications:

    • At least 4 years or 4 campaign cycles of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, including 2+ years of management experience.
    • Collaborative spirit, a willingness and ability to work with a team to reach goals together.
    • Proven ability to lead communications for statewide electoral or ballot campaigns.
    • Excellent writing, editing, and copy review skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
    • Detail-oriented, with exceptional organizational and project management skills.
    • Strong knowledge of Virginia’s media landscape and existing relationships with local and national political reporters.

    Important Details:

    • This role can be based anywhere in Virginia and will require frequent travel consistent with a campaign schedule.
    • The start date will be January 5 or as soon as practical for both parties. This position will run through November 2026.
    • Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience with a $7,000 - $9,000 monthly salary range.
