    Reports to: Executive Director

    Why This Role Is Different

Flatbush Cats has grown from a grassroots rescue group into a nationally recognized voice in animal welfare. Communications has been central to that growth. The organization is now entering a new phase that requires senior communications leadership focused not only on content, but on audience and donor growth, brand stewardship, and building the systems, team, and partnerships needed to scale impact.

This role is about designing and leading a modern communications function. Rather than inheriting a fixed playbook, this leader will help diagnose what the organization needs, shape and implement strategy, and build the operating model required to support sustainable growth.

Success in this role will be closely tied to top-of-funnel growth and acquisition. The coming year is positioned as a capacity-building period, with an emphasis on experimentation, learning, and putting the right structure in place to support long-term execution.

If you are excited by the opportunity to build a mission-driven communications engine and lead growth at a critical moment for a high-impact organization, this role offers both scope and influence.

    Role Summary

The Communications Director leads Flatbush Cats’ communications function at a strategic and operational level. This role is responsible for translating organizational priorities into a cohesive communications strategy, maintaining consistent messaging across channels, and building the team, systems, and growth programs required to expand reach, deepen engagement, and support donor acquisition.

Working in close partnership with the Executive Director, Director of Development, and program leadership, this role ensures that communications efforts are aligned, scalable, and directly supportive of organizational goals.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Communications Strategy, Messaging & Brand Stewardship
      • Implement and evolve organizational messaging and narrative frameworks in partnership with the Executive Director
      • Maintain consistency of voice, framing, and editorial standards across all channels
      • Steward the Flatbush Cats brand across external and internal communications
      • Translate organizational priorities into clear communications plans and editorial direction
      • Oversee development of core organizational materials and messaging assets
    • Audience & Donor Growth
      • Lead development of a comprehensive growth strategy focused on audience expansion and donor acquisition
      • Diagnose current performance across channels and identify opportunities for scale
      • Design and oversee experiments across content, distribution, paid media, and partnerships
      • Own communications contributions to top-of-funnel growth and conversion pathways
      • Oversee paid media strategy and creator/influencer partnerships through staff and partners
      • Partner closely with Development on email marketing and cross-channel campaigns
    • Editorial Leadership & Communications Execution
      • Provide senior editorial guidance across video, social, email, web, and emerging channels
      • Oversee story development, content planning, and editorial calendars
      • Ensure content reflects organizational priorities, values, and audience goals
      • Support media strategy and external communications in collaboration with leadership and partners
    • Team, Systems & Organizational Infrastructure
      • Assess communications structure, workflows, and resourcing
      • Hire, develop, and manage staff and external partners
      • Define in-house versus partner execution models
      • Establish scalable processes, tools, budgets, and performance metrics
      • Improve cross-functional workflows with Development, Programs, and Operations
      • Build a collaborative, accountable, and resilient team culture

    Qualifications

    • 8+ years of experience in communications, media, digital marketing, or related fields, with senior-level responsibility
    • Strong editorial and content leadership background, with the ability to translate messaging across channels
    • Demonstrated success scaling audiences through organic, paid, and partnership-driven growth strategies
    • Experience with paid media programs and external growth partnerships
    • Track record of building and managing teams and external collaborators
    • Strategic and operational mindset, with experience designing systems and structures
    • High emotional intelligence, strong judgment, and comfort operating in evolving environments
    • Excellent writing and communication skills, with a portfolio reflecting strong editorial instincts
    • Experience managing budgets, vendors, and complex cross-functional initiatives

Backgrounds in journalism, digital media, production, or growth-oriented communications are welcomed, particularly where candidates have evolved from hands-on roles into leadership positions responsible for growth, strategy, and team development.

We strongly encourage candidates from underrepresented and marginalized communities to apply.
