    Description

Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms is seeking Program Coordinators who can lead, design, and bring to life hands-on activities for middle and high school youth at our Catskills campus. This is a role for someone who loves working directly with young people, thrives on creativity, and brings energy and structure to group experiences.

    About Steve’s Camp

Steve’s Camp offers a no-cost sleepaway experience for NYC youth from systematically nature-deprived communities, focused on joy, leadership, wellness, and connection to the natural world.

    About This Position

Program Coordinators are in charge of camp activities — not just helping run them. You will design, lead, and facilitate programs daily, while helping create a culture that is fun, inclusive, safe, and meaningful. You will work closely with two other Coordinators and the Program Director to make sure each day’s schedule runs smoothly.

This role requires excitement about learning, leading, and teaching — whether that’s in the kitchen, the garden, or the woods.

A shared room with shared bath is provided. Bus transportation available from NYC.

Key Responsibilities (shared across a 3-person activities team)

    • Design and lead daily camp activities across all sessions — including new and creative ideas
    • Create a session-by-session activity plan that balances fun, learning, and safety
    • Facilitate structured lessons in at least one of the following areas:
      • Culinary Education (cooking, food skills, nutrition, kitchen basics)
      • Garden Education (planting, harvesting, ecology, farm-to-table)
      • Wilderness Education (hiking, outdoor skills, nature literacy)
      • Training provided for coordinators willing to learn and grow in any area
    • Teach youth through hands-on, engaging, culturally responsive methods
    • Lead daily sessions — from setup to cleanup — with strong time management
    • Ensure all counselors arrive prepared and on time (15 minutes early = on time)
    • Maintain activity spaces, supplies, equipment, and storage organization
    • Communicate needs for materials at least 5 days before running low
    • Support a restorative, youth-centered culture across camp
    • Rotate into cabin coverage on counselor days off to supervise and support campers

    What We’re Looking For

    • Someone who loves working with youth — joyful, patient, and present
    • Comfortable leading group activities (not just participating)
    • Creative planner who takes initiative and collaborates with others
    • Able to bring a positive, encouraging tone to every interaction
    • Willingness to learn new skills (culinary, garden, wilderness) during staff training
    • Organized, responsible, and dependable — especially when supervising youth

    Required Qualifications

    • High School graduate; College degree preferred
    • Minimum 2 years experience working with youth (camp, school, afterschool, etc.)
    • Strength and endurance to actively supervise campers all day
    • Valid Driver’s License
    • Must pass background check and meet NYS camp staffing requirements

    Compensation & Schedule

    • $925 per session
    • Must live onsite during sessions — housing, meals, and community provided
    • Travel by bus available from NYC if needed
