    Description

    The Executive Director is the key management leader of AXYS. The Executive Director is responsible for leading the fundraising, donor relations, marketing, and community outreach efforts of the organization while overseeing its administration, programs, projects, and strategic plan. The position is virtual and reports directly to the Board of Directors and follows policies and procedures as the Board states. The Executive Director will also supervise two current part-time staff members. General Responsibilities

    1. Board Governance: Works with the board to fulfill the organization’s mission
      • Responsible for leading AXYS in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors
      • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all necessary information for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions
      • Responsible for bringing changes in policies, procedures, strategic plans, communication strategies, fundraising plans, major budget shifts, etc. to the board for approval
    2. Financial Performance and Growth: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization
      • Take primary responsibility for the financial development of the organization including overseeing and coordinating fundraising activities, identifying and applying for grants, analyzing data from previous campaigns to improve future campaigns, donor relations with an emphasis on personal and regular communication with large donors, and developing other resources necessary to support the AXYS mission.
      • Oversee the financial integrity of AXYS, and, in collaboration with the board treasurer, submit to the Board a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
      • Operate within the approved budget while maximizing utilization of existing resources thereby maintaining the organization in a positive financial position
      • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy that includes individual giving, corporate partnerships, grants, and earned-income opportunities to ensure long-term sustainability.
      • Identify, organize, coordinate, and contribute to applications for various grant opportunities including grants from both private and public sectors
    3. Mission and Strategy: Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community involvement
      • Oversee the development and implementation of programs that carry out the organization’s mission and strategic plans
      • Serve as the primary spokesperson for AXYS and advocate for the needs of the X and Y variation community at the local, national, and, when appropriate, international levels.
      • Enhance the organization’s image by being active and visible in the X and Y Chromosome Variation community and by working closely with other professional, civic, and private organizations
      • Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships that align with AXYS’s mission and expand its reach and impact.
      • The position may include some travel to represent AXYS at conventions, meetings, bi-annual AXYS conferences, and other events.
      • Work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising, and to increase the overall visibility of the organization throughout the country
      • Work closely with the AXYS Clinic and Research Consortium (ACRC) to establish and maintain reciprocal relationships to further research with outcomes benefiting the community
      • Oversee volunteer engagement strategies to expand community participation and capacity.
      • Communicate regularly with stakeholders to provide support and guidance through social media, personal communication, newsletters, and other means
      • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the organization’s programs and operations.
    4. Regularly evaluate organizational performance and program impact, providing reports and recommendations to the Board.
    5. Operations: Oversees and utilizes existing resources to ensure that the organization implements its programs and projects
      • Hire, supervise, and retain competent and qualified staff and volunteers
      • Support an annual performance review process for staff and the organization.
      • Review and sign notes, contracts, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization as delegated by the AXYS board
      • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-driven organizational culture that supports and retains board, staff and volunteers. Works with the board in the planning and operations of an annual budget
      • Supervise the Program Director who is responsible to maintain all required registrations and certifications for compliance with state and federal regulations
      • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, including IRS filings and nonprofit reporting.
      • Maintain appropriate insurance coverage and risk management practices.
      • Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit
      • Oversee the implementation of the AXYS strategic plan and make necessary updates/changes, when necessary, as pre-approved by the Board. Progress of the strategic plan must be tracked as well and reported to the Board.
      • Coordinate Board and oversee the Program Director who is responsible to coordinate committee meetings
      • Oversee marketing and other communications efforts
      • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors

    Professional and Personal Qualifications

    • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree
    • Three or more years senior nonprofit management experience
    • Solid, hands-on budget management skills, including preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting
    • Strong organizational abilities including prioritizing, planning, and delegating program development tasks and activities
    • Ability to convey a vision of the organization’s future to staff, board, volunteers, and donors
    • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the nonprofit sector
    • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members, other volunteers, and staff
    • Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups
    • Strong written and oral communication skills including a strong public speaking ability
    • An understanding of and appreciation for using appropriate language regarding disabilities and gender issues related to some X and Y variations
    • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people including self-advocates, people with an X or Y variation, parents and other family members, doctors and other treatment and intervention specialists, researchers, and government officials.

    This is a virtual part-time 30-hour-per-week position with the possibility of a shift to a full-time position in the future. Compensation range is approximately $60,000.
