The starting salary is expected to be $90,000-$100,000 annually depending on experience.

    Position Overview

    The Controller is responsible for owning the full accounting cycle, performing daily bookkeeping duties, month- and year-end close activities, audit preparation, maintaining grant and restricted fund tracking and reporting, ensuring accurate financial statements, strong internal controls, and compliance with nonprofit accounting and grant requirements for a growing organization.

    Responsibilities

    Accounting & Finance (80%)

    • Perform daily accounting tasks, including billing, processing, tracking and recording of AP and AR, vendor payments, staff reimbursements, payroll allocation entries, bank and credit card reconciliations, and all other journal entries for the company and its fiscally sponsored organizations.
    • Lead the month- and year-end close process, ensuring timely reconciliations and accurate monthly financial statements.
    • Maintain general ledger account reconciliations, document filing, tracking and record keeping, and ensure all entries are accurate and properly coded.
    • Assist in grant reporting and tracking, maintain up-to-date grant schedules and restricted and unrestricted balances; collaborate with partnership engagement and program teams to monitor grant budgets.
    • Oversee expense management platform and ensure proper coding and documentation.
    • Reconcile corporate credit card statements and research discrepancies.

    Audit, Tax & Compliance (10%)

    • Lead the annual audit process in conjunction with the DFO by maintaining organized, audit-ready financial files and grant documentation in coordination with external auditors.
    • Partner with external compliance partner to manage charitable solicitation registrations, renewals, fundraising licensing, and state filings.
    • Maintain internal controls, financial records, and documentation needed for audits and regulatory filings.
    • Support 1099 tax filing.

    Budgeting, Systems, Tools & Process Improvement (5%)

    • Support DFO in annual budgeting process.
    • Improve tracking, documentation, and internal controls to support operational efficiency.
    • Oversee various systems (Quickbooks Online, Bill.Com) and recommend necessary enhancements.

    Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

    • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance & Operations.

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of progressive nonprofit accounting experience, with at least 3 years focused on grants management.
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and restricted/unrestricted revenue.
    • Proficiency in Bill.Com, QuickBooks, Excel, and Word required; Certify/Emburse and Salesforce experience preferred.
    • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail, accuracy, and protocol.
    • Ability to use discretion in maintaining confidentiality of sensitive materials and issues.
    • Ability to work cross-functionally with other departments.
    • A strong sense of passion, purpose, and sense of humor.
    • A commitment to the mission of the Schott Foundation.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required, CPA preferred.

    Travel

    The Schott Team currently operates virtually with staff located throughout the United States. This position requires limited travel to staff retreats and board meetings up to six times a year.
