    About Us

The Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights, NMCIR’s, mission is to educate, defend, and protect the rights of immigrants. As the longest-serving organization providing immigration-related services in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx, we continue to offer culturally competent legal-services, Manhattan’s worker Center and adult literacy classes that directly advance our vibrant immigrant communities.

In addition to direct services, we advocate for systemic change through policy work and community organizing. Our mission is grounded in a healing-centered, trauma-informed approach that prioritizes safe and supportive interactions to foster resilience, dignity, and trust.

    Position Summary

NMCIR is seeking an experienced, independent HR consultant to provide part-time, fractional human resources support. This role is ideal for a senior HR professional who enjoys working with small nonprofit organizations and providing practical, compliance-focused guidance without the need for a full-time role.

This is a remote, contract position providing confidential advisory support to leadership on compliance, employee relations, and HR best practices.

    • Provide HR compliance guidance related to federal, state, and local employment laws (with a focus on New York State)
    • Advise leadership on employee relations matters, including performance management, discipline, documentation, and terminations
    • Review and update HR policies, employee handbook materials, and job descriptions as needed
    • Support leadership with onboarding and offboarding processes
    • Identify HR risk areas and recommend practical, scalable solutions
    • Serve as a confidential, trusted advisor on sensitive personnel matters
    • Provide HR-related input for leadership or board use as needed

    Benefits Advisory & Staff Support

    • Serve as an HR advisor on employee benefits, including health insurance, leave policies, and related compliance matters
    • Support leadership in evaluating benefits offerings and changes
    • Act as a liaison, as needed, between leadership and benefits brokers or payroll providers
    • Assist in addressing staff benefits questions or issues in coordination with existing vendors

    Qualifications

    • 10+ years of progressive HR experience
    • Experience supporting nonprofits or small organizations
    • Strong knowledge of NYS and federal employment law
    • Comfortable advising senior leadership on complex or sensitive HR issues
    • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and maintain strict confidentiality
    • Experience working in a fractional, consulting, or interim HR capacity is strongly preferred
